U3417W, no audio, #1

I've just purchased a U3417W monitor but cannot get any sound from the built in speakers.

I have connected to a Dell XPS15 (windows 10) via DisplayPort (laptop mDP) and also via HDMI, sound does not work for either.

The default device in Windows is the "DELL U3417W" and when using the test play from Sound > Playback nothing can be heard. using the laptop builtin speakers does.

any ideas?

It turns out that there was another Windows update waiting to complete. The Anniversary version. Following that update and reboot the sound is now working!

Have another google I spotted somebody had commented on the default format for audio settings when  having no sound issues in windows

Sure enough changing the value to be 24-bit audio and not 16-bit, the sound suddenly started to work.

(not sure what had changed this)

To be clear this setting is from the "Sound" > "Playback" tab > "properties" of the U3417W > "Advanced" tab > "Default Format". Change from 16-bit to one of the 24-bit options.

Volume: 50

Audio Source: Main  (only option enabled/can use)

Speaker: Enable (tried disable and then re-enable)

Reset Audio

I have tried "Factory Reset", "Reset Others", and "Reset Audio" from audio

Open the U3417W OSD (On Screen Display), go to Audio and tell us what options are available there.

Can you replicate the audio issue on another computer?

Yes. As advised before it is default (and is the only item with a green tick)

On the laptop under Playback Devices, only the DELL U3417W should have the green check. Is that how your setup is?

I've now tried on an older Dell Latitude E6500, but with that the U3417W did not appear in the sound list       and so no sound.  (but that laptop will detect a dell usb sound bar)

I have however attached a google chromecast via the HDMI and played via an iPad and that does play sound. I don't have any other  computers to hand at them moment.

I have now  also applied all latest windows updates and dell updates to the XPS 15.

From Device Manager it has

- Audio inputs and outputs. Dell  U3417W (Intel(R) Display Audio). Driver Version: 10.0.10240.16384 (Microsoft)

- Monitors. Dell U3417W(Display Port) on Intel (R) HD Graphics 4600. Driver verison: 1.0.0.0 (Microsoft)

- Sound, video and game controllers. Intel(R) Display Audio. Driver version: 6.16.0.3197 (Microsoft)

any other ideas or anything else you'd like me to check

unfortunately windows crashed just a few days later (bsod).

after a fresh install of W10 and update to anniversary edition all was good.

a few days later following several windows updates and I've lost sound again :(

I have re-installed all the latest drivers from dell using the auto-detect.

any other ideas?

The culprit has to be some update. But I do not know of a way to stop Win10 updates. Ask the Win10 users here.

I am having the same problem but when I go through the playback device tab I don't have the option to switch to 24. 16 is my only option. Ideas?

I am not familiar with the Corsair One computer. In the Playback, you have to choose the Nvidia audio as the Default Playback device. Then, in the Nvidia Control panel, look for the audio options. If 24 bit is not available, you might need to post on the Corsair Forum and ask other owners.
