Dell XPS 15 9550 Battery not charging

Seems I am now regretting my purchase of a new Dell XPS 15 Laptop.

Purchased on 20th September 2016, and seems as of 5 days ago the battery already needs replacing.

LED on front of laptop just flashes orange, battery status button on the side has LED's 1, 3 and 5 lit.

In Windows 10 Battery says "Plugged in, Not Charging" with 79% available

In BIOS battery says "Battery needs replacing", AC Adapter - 130w and 79% charged.

Laptop will no longer work on battery, has to have AC adapted plugged in and when removed it'll just power off.

After the fact I enabled the USB power option (charging phones etc. when laptop is off) and it doesn't charge without AC Adapter plugged in.

Rather annoyed at myself, I have always avoided Dell but I went against my gut instinct and spent £1400 on a laptop that is no longer fit for purpose.

Guess it's time to buy a replacement battery and never buy anything from dell again

Dell's standard battery warranty is one year. I'd suggest you enter your service tag number [or click Detect Product] onto the link below to check your warranty status.

Before you check warranty status, I have a few suggestions. Please follow steps below:

1. Power off system. Please disconnect all peripherals, AC adapter from system.

2. Remove battery and then press "Power On" button (release static flea) for about 15 seconds then release. Replace battery, AC adapter and then power on system. Hopefully battery charging is fix now.

Many thanks LSUFAN51 for all your replies.

I have done every one of them and unfortunately none of the above have worked.

Thank you for the information regarding their Laptop Battery Warranty I will have to look into this. I had already checked warranty info and it says Parts Only until August 2017.

haha Tech Support just told me why i should have never have bought a dell product

Parts Only Warranty ........ Battery = Non-Consumer Replaceable Part because you have to open some screws

In other words their Parts Only Warranty for the XPS 15 only covers the charger, you really couldnt make it up

Amazing! I'm shock on this one. I thought for sure Dell would have sent you a free battery for that nice expensive computer. My Apologies.....:emotion-6:

You can check in the link below for a Dell battery. I hope you're able to find one at a decent price.

Thanks for the update.

Hi FLIP99,

Rather unfortunate you have had to face issue on a new system.

Private message me the service tag of the system and provide a copy of the invoice, I shall check the warranty details for you.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

Not sure there is any point in wasting anymore time with DELL, already spent 30 minutes on the phone to Dell Tech Support checking the "so called" warranty.

Its a Parts Only Warranty, and you cannot send me anything other than a charger because apparently you need to be a qualified engineer to unscrew 18 screws and replace a battery. Obviously I have already removed the battery as per Dell's own troubleshooting guide (as above posted by LSUFAN).

It was purchased from PC World, not Dell direct. I purchased it from there because my old laptop had finally packed up and I needed a laptop so I could work the same day.

It's actually rather patronising that you want to check the warranty details for me, it is as if you think I called the incorrect number and spoke to someone not from DELL. I know DELL think that its customers are idiots and cannot unscrew 18 screws to replace a battery but its even simpler to check warranty .. here, have a screenshot with service tag info removed.

Now you are going to tell me that a battery cannot be sent out in the post as it's not a consumer replaceable part and an engineer needs to replace it but I don't have labour included in my warranty so DELL cannot fix it nor can they supply replace parts for the faulty parts and I have to return it to PC World for them to fix.

I have contacted PC World and they think your policy is as stupid as it actually is, and they wish to charge me for them to replace the battery. Not only will they charge me to fix a 2 month old £1400 top spec laptop but they will need my laptop for around 2-3weeks!

As a computer programmer I need a laptop to work, I cannot afford to take up to 3 weeks off work because of a stupid warranty on a poor quality super expensive laptop that obviously has numerous battery issues judging by the amount of "plugged in, not charging" threads on this forum.

DELL-Rishi I have private messaged you the service tag and a copy of my receipt.

So what you are now telling me is that your Tech Support department who I spoke to gave me false information, or is it you would replace the battery through the post because this is now being discussed on your public community forum?

I spent 30 minutes telling the female call operator that I had already removed the battery as per this post but she insisted that DELL cannot send a battery, and the only possible part DELL could send out is a charger, she was very adamant.

Hi FLIP99,

Firstly, I did not intend to offend you in anyway.

I would need the service tag and copy of invoice to cross verify the order details as per our records.

If you are able to remove a specific part, then the part can be replaced by yourself under Dell Warranty terms.

Having said this, kindly private message me the service tag, so I could advise further course of action.

Let us know if you have any other queries.
