Hello. When you insert the headphone plug into the jack socket, you should see a popup asking you to specify the function of the jack. On some very recent Dell models, the headphone jack will not work correctly without the popup. But some XPS models have had a similar symptoms to the ones you describe, especially the part about the jack not working unless booting up with the plug in the jack. On those XPS models, the motherboards had to be replaced.

Contact tech support. If they cannot immediately find a software reason for the issues, then consider returning the laptop as defective. It should not have left the factory with those issues.

I had the same problem happen to me today and I contacted tech support. They told me that it was a hardware problem with my computer and that I had to return it in order for them to send me a replacement. It ***, but at least it'll take care of the issue.

The important thing is does, or did the popup occur when you plugged in the headset, and it does have to be fully inserted.

I am currently running Realtek driver version 6.0.1.8036 but there is an update to 6.1.0.8142.  The newer version of the driver may have an option to disable the popup but you should still be able to select the headset by opening the Waves utility from the hidden icons on the taskbar.  From there you can make changes.

You also need to be aware, if you are using iTunes, once that utility is opened, it will not automatically switch to another output device.

If it is a hardware issue I suppose there would be nothing you could do.
