PERC H700 (replacing RAID5 with RAID10)

Hi!

we have a PowerEdge T310 with PERC H700 and 4x 1TB HDDs in RAID5.

Now I want to replace the old HDDs with 4x 4TB in RAID10.

My approach is to create a complete backup of the machine, replace the HHDs, create new RAID10 and do a recovery of the system.

Now my question: is it possible to save the current RAID5 configuration, in case  something goes wrong?
E.g. if the recovery process fails and I decide to reinsert the old HDDs, will the PERC H700 "remember" and I will be able to start the old system again?

Thanks for help!

Hkuehn,

The controller won't remember the configuration if you delete the Virtual Disk, but the controller and the drives both retain the raid configuration. So when you delete the Raid 5 from the controller, you are only removing the raid information from the controller. So it will still have the raid configuration saved on the drives. If you do decide to go back then you need to insert the raid 5 drives and then boot to the controller BIOS and you will see them flagged as Foreign, which is due to the controller and drives not sharing the same data. Simply IMPORT the Foreign configuration and that will tell the controller to trust the configuration information on the drives and save the details to the controller.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks a lot for your answer!
I plan to do the migration over the next weekend.
Its good to know that it should be no problem to go back to the old configuration if anything goes wrong with the restore.
