Can I use a Latitude battery in my Inspiron?

I ran the battery down in my Inspiron 5720 while I was working away, and in desparation swapped it for the battery from my Latitude E6540 so I could continue working. To my surprise this works just fine. It charges normally and the laptop reports the battery percentages normally. Since the Latitude battery has a higher capacity than the Inspiron battery I get a longer battery life as well.

So my question is can I carry on using the Latitude battery or will it damage my Inspiron?

The Latitude battery model number is N3X1D while the original Inspiron battery is an 8858X. The batteries are physically identical.

Hi johnhsrennie,

Thank you for reaching out to Dell Community Forum.

You can use the battery at your discretion as we wouldn't recommend using the battery from the Latitude E6540 on an Inspiron 5720.

Please private message us the service tag of the system along with your email id, if you have any query.

(Note: please don't mention the service tag or email id on the public forum as it contains your personal information).
