So I have a new U2415 monitor, it arrived last week.  Everything is fine with it, except that I'm disappointed with the black level / viewing angle.  I have it angled towards me on my desk, along with my existing monitor, and the far right corner is noticeably washed out in dark screens.  If I center my head on the monitor, it's not as bad, but still there.

My existing monitor is another Dell, an old 2405FPW which was one of the best purchases I've ever made, and has served me well for over ten years, and it has blacker blacks.  They don't wash out as I move my head left or right of center on the screen, even if I look almost directly across the front of the screen from the side.  I also have a pair of Dell U2412Ms at work, and they also don't seem to have this issue; full screen black terminals look about the same from any angle.

I'm wondering is my monitor defective, or is this just due to the way this particular model is built?  If it's not a defect, I may just return it and look for another.  Maybe I'm being too anal about it, but it's frustrating to have had such good experience with an older Dell monitor and be disappointed after spending the money for newer model.

I've attached a link to the photos taken of the self test screens suggested above, as well as some pictures of the two screens on a Linux console which is totally black, and another of the two screens mirroring my desktop.  It's fairly evident in the photos the difference.  The new monitor is on the right.

For these photos the U2415 was at factory settings and the old 2405FPW was at 75% brightness.

Based on the center view self test screens, Dell could not exchange this. You should contact Dell Customer Service to arrange for refund before the first 30 days from the invoice date has passed. Our manufacturer measure black in lab with 150lux ambient lighting (similar to typical office lighting). It appears your room is much darker than this. General, the older PVA panel with CCFLs U-type backlight had much darker black than the new breed of IPS panel with LED edgelight backlight.

Thanks for that response Chris M.  It's true my room is not super well lit, but the pictures make it out to be darker than it really was.

Is there another model available (that is also 1920x1200) that I might be more satisfied with?

If not, the question is, would I be any more satisfied with a similar monitor from another manufacturer...

My advice, check out a local store that has several vendor monitors actually up and running. Try to compare the blacks there side by side.
