Replacing SSD / RAM

I've got an xps 15 9560 arriving next week.

I've chosen the one with a PCIe SSD and the small battery as I have a relatively new 1tb SATA SSD that I want to install.

Do I void my warranty by installing the SSD?

I'd also probably upgrade the ram at some point, would this also void my warranty?

My laptop comes with

  • XPS comes with 1year Premium Support with Onsite Service for peace of mind

Would this cover a Dell engineer coming to my house to install an SSD or RAM. If so will there be any extra cost?

Does it matter that the SSD is used and already has data on it?

thanks

You won't void your warranty by installing the drive -- however, installation of parts not supplied by Dell isn't covered - so it's either do it yourself, or pay a shop to do the job.

It should not matter that the drive has data on it (as long as you're not expecting to boot and run Windows from it -- or the applications installed on it).  That's not going to happen.

While they're correct that the caddy/connector won't be present unless you purchase the system with the 2.5" drive (you'll have to order one separately), internal parts such as this can be user-changed -- while the warranty won't cover damage done in the process, neither will the system warranty be voided.

Dell does not do post-purchase upgrade installs at all - that's at your option (and cost if you choose to hire a shop to do the job).

My understanding is that Dell use a proprietary wire to connect the sata drive to the motherboard. When I placed  my order I asked if this cable would be or could be included the delivery and they said no it couldn't. The guy I spoke to then went on to say I couldn't install it myself as it would void the warranty, so would need to get a Dell registered engineer to do it for me.

The mutual understanding in the conversation wasn't that great, so I wanted to get some forum feedback on whats what.
