Cartridge carrier SLAMMING into side of printer!!!
Here's a strange one for you all. We have a Lexmark X85 (yeah, I know- bad choice, but it's what came with our PC). Needed to change the black ink cartridge tonight, changed the cartridge, and now when we try to turn the power to the printer on, it waits a couple of seconds and then the ink cartridge carrier returns(?) to the left side of the printer and SLAMS into the left side of the printer. We're talking hitting the side so hard that the printer literally moves! This of course knocks one or both of the cartridges loose. We reinstall them and then on the printer there's a message that says "Carrier Stall Press power key ". We do that and then the same thing happens all over again!
Anybody have any idea what could be wrong with this thing? We haven't ever had any (mechanical) problems with this printer until now. We used it yesterday and everything was fine.
Of course we have something that has to be printed before tomorrow morning!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing specific, however, if this just started with the new cartridge, the new cartridge may be bad (or not making proper contact with the printed ciruit in the printer that the cartridge contacts). Change the position of the cartridges and see if that makes any difference (just change them to see what happens). Also, remove the new cartridge (leave the slot blank) and see if that helps. This may help to isolate what the problem is.
Also, is this a new "Lexmark" cartridge or some other cartridge or refilled cartridge? If it's not a "new" Lexmark and the proper model for your printer that can be the problem.

I tried what you suggested, without any luck. The cartridges are a little different on the top, I guess to keep one from accidentally switching the two. However I tried to put the old one back in and the same thing still happens. The new cartridge is a new Lexmark cartridge.
Very bizarre.

I had same problem and called lexmark.
Simply fix ... remove the cartridges and using you forefinger and thumb, squeeze the drive belt together and let it go. Repeat this process a few times.
Reinstall the cartridges and turn it back on. You may have to repeat the process a few times but amazingly it does work.

Wow! All things should be that easy to fix!! I tried it once and got it on the first time, just before my wife got home. She didn't believe me when I told her how I came about getting it fixed until she saw your post!
