Error 678 simple solution

THE solution for Error 678. You are going to either laugh or cry it's so simple.

By ENABLING the external modem (either USB or Ethernet) in Network Connections in control panel. All user who have experienced this problem, are using high speed internet connection.
I am a Dell technical support phone agent and I have been looking for an answer to this issue for long now.
I "played" with my Network Connections settings at home and was able to provoke the error. I simply disabled the external modem. That's all. Then I tested it by enabling and disabling it many times. Iwas able to connect without error using the shortcut on my desktop, only when the external modem was enabled. Everytime I would try to connect with the external modem disabled, I would get the now famous Error 678.

If an Internet Explorer Browser is open and the system is not connected, clicking on something would brings up the dialer. It will show the user a no dial tone result, only if the external modem is disabled. If it was enabled, the same dialer window would open and the user could see the successful connection process. Like I did.

With this, I was able to prove that THIS and ONLY THIS solution is the most simple and direct to this issue. Go ahead, try it.

Bienvenue.

I could not keep this one for myself. Not one technicien at work or even at Sympatico have been able to solve that issue. That is until now  .

Good! At its essence, technical support is about communication.

Sorry, I have seen your solution posted on the various message boards, and I'm here to say it doesn't work for everyone.  Tried it, and no change in my Error 678 situation.  Thanks for trying!

Dell Inspirion 3647

Windows 8

Unfortunately we are still unable to get online. We purchased a Hiro H50113 2.0 usb external modem and regardless how we change the settings we are unable to get online. I can connect our laptop, also with Windows 8 BUT it is a Toshiba with absolutely no problem. Plugged the usb right in, entered name, pass and access number with no problem. On the Dell desktop we get an error 678 and have gone to the extent of even changing out the phone cable and obviously not the problem due to the laptop connecting with no problem. Wondering if the Dell desktop is requiring a Dell brand USB modem and that this could be the issue.
