Alienware X51 R1 - 1600MHz RAM running at 1333Mhz

Prior to the upgrade, I talked to an Agent in the Dell Chat and the Agent mentioned that it will run at 1600MHz. I wasn't upset about upgrading to the RAM I wanted after that session.

I then upgraded my RAM from 8GB 1333MHz to 16GB 1600MHz (MPN: CML16GX3M2A1600C10. Then, I checked the speed to make sure it's running at 1600MHz but it was only running at 1333MHz. I would like to know why it's running at 1333MHz instead of 1600MHz, and if possible, know how to make it run at 1600MHz.

Hello! According to the manual, the memory will only run at 1333 MHz since it’s the maximum speed supported by the system. Any 1600 MHz memory you install in the computer will downclock to 1333 MHz due to this hardware limitation.

Hi! I currently have an X51 R1 with the following specs:

i7-3770 @ 3.4Ghz

8gb Ram - 1600 mhz (as shown in BIOS SETUP)

Palit 2GB GTX 660Ti (upgraded from the stock 1.5gb GTX 555)

240GB Sandisk Extreme II SSD (added)

1TB 7400 Rpm HDD (stock)

A14 BIOS

WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM

I decided to upgrade my RAM to 16GB. So i bought the CORSAIR Vengeance DDR3 16GB (2X8GB) 1600MHz (CMZ16GX3M2A1600C9).

After installing the new RAMs, the memory clock speed as shown in my BIOS SETUP read at 1333MHz only.

I ran CPU-Z to check and it showed that for the stock RAM (2x4GB), the max bandwidth is PC3-12800. For the new RAM (2x8GB), the max bandwidth is only PC3-10700.

Any idea why it showed 1600MHz for the stock 8GB (2x4GB) and 1333MHz only for the 16GB (2x8GB)??

Hi, aboogen123.  Yes I was able to upgrade to 16GB RAM 1600mHz. I swapped the CORSAIR 2x8GB kit to a non-kit version (i think the brand is also CORSAIR).  My x51-R1 was able to read it as 1600mHz.
