Aurora R4 motherboard with GTX 1050 TI no boot

Hi everyone,

I'm running a small computer repair business.
I was handed over an older Alienware Aurora R4 desktop.
The client bought a new GPU (Nvidia GTX 1050 TI) for it and got a single boot from it after install.
After this full boot no response ever came from the GPU, the PC was never able to completely boot again and the beep code was 6 beeps (meaning something should be wrong with the GPU).

I have reset the CMOS with no success, then tried the other PCI port with still no results.
Then I used the GTX 1050 TI in a working desktop (after driver install!) with success.

Right now I see 2 possible scenario's but I'm still blown backwards by the fact that he got 1 boot out of it before.
1: There are compatibility issues between the R4's motherboard and the GTX 1050 TI
2: The motherboard is partially broken

I want to be very careful in handeling this sort of things, that's why I don't like to try another working GPU on his motherboard.

Could someone give my any ideas or confirmations on this matter?
Is there any information on the compatibility of that motherboard and GPU?
Is this an known issue? Could there be other causes?
Or do you guys also fear there are issues with the mb and it should be replaced?

Many thanks for your help!

Problem is that this Aurora R4 doesn't seem to have ANY video output ports on the motherboard as far as I can see.

That's why I did a manual CMOS reset by changing the CMOS Jumper.

It can certainly be that this CMOS is not correctly configured by default.

How do you advise me to change de BIOS settings without video output? Or do you suggest to temporarely use a second GPU to enable the correct BIOS settings?

Many thanks for your answer!

As you can see in my comment bellow it didn't work with a GTX 770 either, anymore thoughts on the matter?

Then something else is bad (maybe power-supply or motherboard).

I hope you took the time to read the long guide I linked you to.

Not that the Aurora-R4 is particularly old, but that's a fairly new thing ... having on-board or Intel IGP on motherboards intended to mostly use dedicated PCIe Add-in video cards.

I hope you downloaded PDF manuals.

I understand.

It does make the troubleshouting a lot harder in this case.

As you can see in my comment bellow it didn't work with a GTX 770 either, anymore thoughts on the matter?

Well, that's a basic trouble-shooting step ... make machine as basic as possible or try other combination of parts to see where "problem follows".

I've tried with a GTX 770 which gave the same error(code) of 6 beeps.

These are my least favorite repairs ... where an unqualified person has started the repair or upgrade and it went bad. Most common mis-step is not dissipating residual "flea" power before swapping parts. Who knows, maybe machine wasn't even unplugged on that first swap.

There is nothing really special about any Alienware desktop. The Aurora-R4 just has a MSI motherboard with a custom BIOS.

Don't get too freaked-out by the liquid-cooling or MIO-Board:

I have tested with a GTX 770, and the same problem occured (6 beeps, no boot).

So this problem is probably not related to BIOS settings? Or can I be wrong

Did you try it in both slots?

Is there 12volts on PCIe power-cables?

Okay guys,

first of all thank you all for trying to help!

I have sent an email to support@alienware.com this noon, so I expect an answer this week.

In the mail I also mentioned some other things about a replacement motherboard.

Maybe some of you can help me further with those questions?

could you please confirm if the following motherboard is completely compatible with the original case, cabeling and CPU?
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/RAMPAGE_IV_GENE/overview/ (I saw that this case uses the same chipset and it looks like it would fit, but it states 2nd gen I7 instead of 3rd gen which the R4 seems to run).
If this would not be completely compatible, could you please advise another motherboard that is?

Thanks!

Tried both ofcourse and both acted the same.

I didn't find any factsheet from the 875W power supply but the desktop had a 660 as standard GPU so this should have been fine.

As all fans spin, the lights light up and only the 6 beep errorcode plays I think the power-supply is fine.

Although I've never noticed the green PSU LED, but in de guide is said that this doesn't always indicate a failure.

Yes I took a good look at that guide you sent earlier, thanks.

Thank you for this information!

So the Aurora-R4 was shipped with Windows 8 with the key burned into the UEFI of the motherboard? Otherwise if it's possible to extract that key from the Hard Drive there will be no issue.

If so I could still extract the W8 license from an 'old' pc from mine, that I only kept to disassemble and reuse the parts

Yeah, well Good Luck with that.

You can check this forum for after-market motherboard replacement build thread examples for Aurora-R4.

Anything other than exact Dell/Alienware OEM replacement MB will likely require a new Windows license and/or CoA key (to stay legit).

Not really agreeing with your current plan of motherboard replacement (based on the troubleshooting steps so far, or info you have provided back to us here) but these notes might help you:

========================

The Aurora-R4 shipped with six motherboards. Systems that shipped with Windows 8 Home or Pro did not receive a COA sticker.

41DDY = Motherboard 8FMMC + Windows 7
KR0CX = Motherboard 8FMMC + GR1D3 Windows 8 Home DPK (Digital Product Key)
TRGPK = Motherboard 8FMMC + PC0XY Windows 8 Pro DPK
(8FMMC Motherboard for Ivybridge E i7-4820K, i7-4930K, i7-4960X)

6GV70 = Motherboard C5D9P + Windows 7
DVTPX = Motherboard C5D9P + GR1D3 Windows 8 Home DPK
85G26 = Motherboard C5D9P + PC0XY Windows 8 Pro DPK
(C5D9P Motherboard for Sandybridge i3-2120, i7-3820, i7-3930K, i7-3960)

1. That's quite as assumption. There are many voltages. I test PC Power-Supplies with $20 Digital Power-Supply Tester (as my guide says).

2. If the PS LED don't at least respond properly, it's likely bad (or at least you move to item #1 above).

I will test the voltages with a digital voltage meter.

But knowing that all fans spin and that the GTX 1050 TI uses onboard power from the motherboard instead of 2 12V Power Inputs, the powersupply should be fine not?

I know that those 12V could be broken if I was trying to get a GPU hooked up that uses them, but this is simply not the case with the 1050 TI, anyways I'm glad that you warm me for these things, your help is very much appreciated!
