Alienware M17x R4 Black Screen At Start Up, Windows Files Becoming Corrupt after Restart

Hey Alienware Tech support,

Just wondering if anyone could assist me with my laptop.

Two days ago i was playing a game on the laptop when it just went black screen and restarted. Nothing in the crash dump and no logs in the event manager to show something obvious. I tried to update my graphics driver thinking it may assist to find that when i did, i was recieving a black screen at windows startup, which i could bypass by either closing the laptop lid and reopening or plugging a HDMI cable in for a second to a tv and the laptop screen would come up.

Did FURMARK stress tests on the GPU and MEMTEST on the Ram, pulled sticks out and put them back to no avail. So i did as any normal person would do and re installed a fresh windows 10. Worked, let windows update the graphics driver and all was good. Installed my games again and left it overnight to update. Came back to it this afternoon and it was off. Turned it back on only to be greeted by the windows bootup sound and a spinning circle.

I then booted it into safe mode and did a SFC /Scannow which came back with desktop.lnk and powershell.lnk and a whole variety of other WINDOWS files corrupt. So i went into my folders and noticed theres a WINDOWS.OLD folder there (I deleted it after the re-install) and am wondering if thats whats caused it. Anyway i tried a system restore to a before i let the updates install, no avail, came up with an error which im guessing is to do with the windows files being no good.

Laptop still boots into Safe Mode but apart from that its an expensive paperweight at the moment.

Hi,

You can use the below playlist to follow all the steps on how to do a proper clean installation of Windows 10, also you have some videos on how to create media (since we don't know if the media you have is corrupted or not). So, do a clean installation, then reinstall drivers and let me know how it goes:

Just keep on mind that Windows 10 is not supported on this model and that could be causing issues as well.

Windows 10 won't cause any major problems except for some motherboard revisions where the command keys will not work, otherwise there is no problem, I've installed 10 on at least 30 M17xR4 models

Thank you I will do this tonight and see how I go.

Is there any easy way to test the hard drive as I'm beginning to think it is my problem? Also I put in a warrenty extension request just wondering where that would be.

You can try the Dell PSa test.

It not the best but its a start.

Bootup your laptop and hit the F12 key during initial boot, then select the test.

Otherwise you can download a number of test programs, some of the manufacturers provide free software to do this, if you know what brand your HDD is go to their website and download a test program.
