Hi-Res monitor blacks out intermittently with HDMI connection

M17X R4/Win8 64 bit with GTX680 GPU

Nixeus 27" monitor with 2560X1440 native resolution

I finally figured out how to switch from the integrated graphics card to discreet.  I can drive the laptop screen, 27" Nixeus and another 23" monitor all at the desired native resolutions.  But on the 27" Nixeus which is my main monitor, certain actions cause it to black out.  It flashes back momentarily and there are black horizontal lines across the window I tried to open.  Various actions trigger it but maximizing windows pretty much always does.  I can run a browser window in a reduced state for a while, but not at all in maximized mode.

The blacking out continues until I use the laptop monitor to close the offending window by right clicking on it down in the tray. I read on an Nvidia forum post that it could be some sort of over heating problem and to test by replacing the HMDI connection with a VGA.  This makes the problem go away but of course I lose the quality I want.

I am running the GTX drivers from Dell Support which are older.  I wanted to get some feedback before trying the newer drivers from Nvidia.

I got this laptop/GPU  so I could one day push 2 -  27" hi-res monitors, one HDMI and the other with the Display Port.  I haven't tried the Display Port yet to see if it has the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi jasonfrink,

The HDMI and VGA port on your system are limited to a 1080p resolution, you should use the display port and it should work fine.

Hi Natalia,

Thanks for your response.  If you're right, I am VERY disappointed because I was assured by the Dell sales rep that this laptop would drive two 2560X1440 monitors plus the laptop screen.  If what you say is true it won't.  However the specs of the GTX 680 graphics card indicate that it should.

I ordered a cable for the display port and will test it when it arrives in 3-5 days.  But please tell me if the following makes sense to you:

When I connect the VGA cable I can select the native resolution of my monitor (2560X1440) and it works.

When I connect using the HDMI cable I experience the problem running a resolution of 1920X1080 (1080p) or any other resolution for that matter.

Also, only certain actions/programs trigger it.  Maximizing windows explorer does it every time.  But I can play a video full screen with media player and it never causes the problem.  Seems like if it was a limitation of the HDMI port it would always occur.

Thanks,

I tested the HDMI cable with another 28" 1080P monitor and the blacking out did not occur.  So it appears that Natalia is right about the limitation of the HDMI out of this laptop.

I would like to understand.  Is this a limitation of the GTX680 GPU or the HDMI port of the laptop?  Can it be upgraded?
