Can't enable 3D Vision on M17x-r3

Hi all

I've just received my Alienware M17x-r3 via the Dell outlet with a GTX 560M and the 1080 3D screen, but I am unable to get any 3D functionality.  Under the Nvidia Control Panel there is no "Stereoscopic 3D" section in the menu, and clicking the "Enable 3D" from the start menu has no affect.

Directly clicking some of the executables in the 3D Vision folder tells me that the 3D is not enabled or that the screen doesn't support 3D.I have tried this with the latest driver from the Dell site and the latest direct from nVidia, both having no 3D functionality as described above.

Looking at the downloads on the dell support site I came across this <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>which is an updated vBios for the card which I read somewhere else should solve this issue.  I've followed the instructions and attempted to flash the bios but to no success, with the following feedback (Notice the error right at the end):

GPU-Z Reports this (again somewhere I saw that the latest bios should be A2:

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I thought on the right middle side of the Alienware Club page was a "join"? Once I joined, it no longer appears. I don't know about the roxio question. Can you try it burning another CD using the Windows app?

I added the group as a favourite, does this allow you to move my post?  I will try burning again shortly, just trying a system restore at the moment.

Hi Chris, many thanks for your reply.  Regarding the joining the club I'm unable to find the Join button.  Click on the Alienware Club in the drop-down from Owners Clubs takes me to the club page but I can't see how to join.

Yes those are the instructions I followed. Note I burned via Roxio rather than "Windows Disc Image Burner", is this important/

In the upper bar, click Owners Club, click Alienware Club. Join the Club. Let me know when you do this so I can move this post into that board.

Just to be clear, you followed these instructions and got the error?
* Download the vbios driver
* Insert a Blank CD or DVD.
* To burn the file, Right click the ISO file and choose "Open With" and choose "Windows Disc Image Burner"
* Restart the Computer and press F12 when the Alien Logo appears, choose from the Boot Menu the Optical Drive
* The system will boot up from the disc and start the vbios flash
* When it finishes, the computer will keep in a DOS environment, take out the disc, at this point turn off the computer and start up again
* Uninstall and Reinstall the video card

Rayvier,

After you do the vbios update, the instructions state to remove and reinstall the drivers. In the other case we are trying to figure out if the original CD image was messed up by using Roxio instead of windows.

Hi, I have the same issue. I'm not seeing how uninstalling and reinstalling the driver fixes the Error on the VBIOS update.

A bit of clarification please regarding "* Uninstall and Reinstall the video card".  Is this uninstalling the driver then reinstalling, or via the device manager?

Correct. Uninstall the driver via Control Panel Programs and Features, then restart, then reinstall the driver.

Sexyfish and Rayvier,
For my notes, send me your service tag numbers via private message.

I sent an email off to engineering with a link to this thread. Let's see what they say. My gut says your looking at getting an onsite service to replace the video card. Hopefully it will be an A2. If not, we can try the vbios again.

Yeah, same here, I burned the ISO from the dell website using both ROXIO on one disc and Windows on another and both gave me the error.

completed a system restore to the earliest restore I had, then reburned the DVD using the windows burner.  Rebooted, tried to flash the vBios but got exactly the same results.  Tried to uninstall drivers but nothing happened when clicking on the drivers in the program list.  So, running the install downloaded from the Dell site states no drivers installed, so installed the new drivers (269.03)

So basically, retried everything, but unable to flash the vBios with the same error occuring.

Where next?

SexyFish,

The Bios version shown in your GPUZ picture is correct, 70.26.36.00.09. That means your video card already has the vbios update which is why you cannot install it. But, GPUZ is mis-reporting the revision. It should read A2.

That does not explain why you cannot get 3D Functionality. I emailed them asking how we should troubleshoot that issue.

Hi Chris.  Regarding the incorrect reporting of the Bios revision by GPU-Z, I've checked the device manager and it also versions to revision A01.

Also FYI, I've had an email back regarding the transferring of the Service Tag informing me that there is some issue with it and they have asked me to supply them with photos confirming the Service tag on the sticker on the underside of the machine and also as displayed in the bios.  I have sent these pictures off as well as a copy of my invoice/order pdf so hopefully that will resolve that issue.

Additionally the system bios is not the latest version, would it be worth updating to a newer version of the bios?  I'm currently running bios version A04, whereas the latest version is A08.

I don't want to run the risk of a bios update just on the off chance it might work, only if there is a legitimate reason to do so.

Thanks
