Brand new (1 day old) Aurora R6 with NVIDIA 1080 showing primary surface test failure WVC07-LYZ

Hi,

So, I just purchased the Alienware Aurora R6 PC with NVIDIA 1080 and i7-7700 processor yesterday (6/2/2017).

Today, I decided to run a check up test on it after updating all the necessary drives and what not. I've ran the test 3 times out of disbelief, but I keep getting error code WVC07-LYZ primary surface test failure. I have not tried to overclock my GPU nor do/did i have any other program running while running the test.

I am really avoiding in having to return the PC for an exchange because i love this thing.

Does anybody know what causes this issue? or how I could fix it?

Thanks

Go into Device Manager, select intel graphics, and select update driver.

You may also want to uninstall the graphics card driver and reinstall from NVidia web site using the clean install option.

I think you must be using some Dell online Diagnostics or Support Assist.

There is a long standing bug in that software that incorrectly throws that error (just search forum). That is a false-positive. If you need suggestions for stress-testing your video card and system, search my Bookmarks or just ask.

I was using the support assist program to run the check up test.

i follow to do a clean uninstall of nvidia, then reinstalled it. it did solve the primary surface test failure issue.

i am having other issues with the support assist program, ive never owned a dell pc so i am unfamiliar with the support assist. should i disregard the program completely then?

i do have another issue with the chipset intel management engine interface driver prompting to need an urgent update in the support assist program. however, every time i try to update it, it just reboots my computer and it does nothing.

i have already manually installed it, and when i check the device manager, it does say it is up to date.

whenever i open the support assist program, it still keeps wanting me to update the chipset intel management engine interface driver.

You may be running an older version of SupportAssist. Open the program and check for an update. SupportAssist is a good tool so continue to use it.

To update most drivers it is best to search for new drivers using the Device Manager. In Device Manager to update the chipset and management engine, look under System Devices and select (Intel(R) Management Engine Interface) and (Intel(R) xxxx Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port xxxx) "xxxx" would be your particular chipset series.

While in Device Management you can select as many devices as you want to check for drivers that need updating. The most common ones that are available for updates are the WiFi and Bluetooth drivers.

By updating the chipset using device manager the SupportAssist will no longer show an urgent update required. Thus the solution to the OP question. The Chipset urgent update has been around for many months and using the device manager solution easily corrects this issue.

The Chipset Drivers Update amounts to an "inf" text upgrade and not really a driver.

The SupportAssist is a tool and was designed with no one person in mind. Thus use it as such, as a tool if you like. It has a number of functions to test various systems and componets for trouble shooting. I also do not use it to download updates as they are usually dated by the time they are posted by Dell. Checking for updates, other than BIOS, have always been more relavant by using the device manager.

1. I personally don't use ... never had a reason to.

2. It's not like Chipset Drivers change or need to be reinstalled. I suggest you just install these and move on with your life.

I also don't use any Dell tools (online of otherwise) to tell me what updates I need. It would be nice to (like on my Lenovo) but I've never found the Dell ones to be any where near 100% accurate . So, too risky for me ... I just do them manually as required. I also don't care for BIOS updates being offered and attempted install so casually or even carelessly.

As machine gets older, most only come from Microsoft Update or Nvidia.com anyway. Maybe grab an Alienware Command Center update every so often.

Hi CharLeeRay‌,

The error "WVC07-LYZ primary surface test failure" and the chipset intel management engine interface driver prompting to need an urgent update, both are Support Assist errors. This has already been escalated and it looks like a new version will come out in about a month.

So it is not a computer problem, don't worry.
