Alienware M17X R4 Charging Issue?

Hello!

I've finally got a replacement Alienware M17x R4 after my other one was 'faulty' so tech support said. I'm not so sure now.

So I have an Alienware M17x R4 with windows 8. The laptop will charge no problem whilst the laptop is on, if I turn the laptop off it will continue to charge as the alien head changes color, and it will boot up fine.

However, should I turn the laptop off, unplug it for the night say and plug the charger back in, the alienhead will not light up and will not charge, and then when I turn on the laptop the keyboard will not light up correctly untill Windows 8 has booted up to the desktop.

This is the second laptop to have done this straight out of the box? I have updated the BIOS (A11) and I'm running the latest version of all the drivers.

Any suggestions? It bugs me that it won't charge whilst the laptop is turned off.

Ok,

Just to update everyone on this encase they have the same issue.

After speaking with tech support they said the motherboard was faulty and would need to be replaced. After arranging for someone to take the day off he turned up, now for starters he wasn't sure what he was there to do as the paperwork didn't say. Nonetheless a quick phone call explaining the issue and he got to it.

He said to the person that it was done, and I picked it up a few hours later. Needless to say it wasn't fixed and another phone call to Tech support was made. They agreed to look into the matter as it shouldn't have been left faulty. 2 days later,  Tech support  rung back to say that there is an issue with the BIOS and that replacing any part's is useless. They can't say when and if it will get fixed now, all they can do is report it.

So to summarise - 7 phone calls made, several people dialling in to the laptop to change various settings, several re-install's of various software's, different people saying the problem is different things and now a new motherboard.

So here we are, a sub 2000 pound laptop that can't charge. Perfect, just perfect.

Hi Lutke,

Checkout this article for more information about this problem.

Try the following:

- Power Drain: without battery and AC adapter attached to the computer, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

- BIOS flash to the latest on our main support page.

- Try different power outlets.

If the problem persists and you have an active warranty and you live in the US or Canada, please send me a private message.

Hi Lutke,

Nope it's still not sorted, and Dell even posted a new BIOS last week which didn't fix the issue. So like a I said, new BIOS didn't fix it, nor did a new motherboard, nor did trying Alexanders guide above.

I may try to take this further as I can't go on, having a laptop then doesn't charge when it's turned off.
