Aurora-R4, 8.1 update, Fan Issues

My PCI and Hard drive fans just started running wide open all the time shortly after Windows 8.1 update. They respond to manual control but when on auto they run at 100%. I uninstalled the Command Center Controls, removed the registry keys, rebooted and installed the latest Command Center package from the web and the problem persisted. Thinking it was a Windows 8.1 error I reset to the factory Windows 7 build that originally came on the computer and it seemed to work correctly for a day or so and is now running the fans wide open again. The ePSA diagnostics check out and all the fans past diagnostic testing. All temperature readings say 77 degrees F and it states the cooling pump is running. I'm seeing alot of info about faulty  master I/O boards possibly being the culprit. Anyone have any experience with this issue before I jump through tech support. I work overnights and can't troubleshoot on the phone with a rep until next week.

New Command center has fixed my lights issue now and the fan problem was already pretty rare since the A10 bios.

I do believe this is fixed now for 8.1!!!

I think you must have a different system then the Aurora R4 and using Windows 8.1 . If you look at that specific program download and check under compatibility it states that the program is compatible with Aurora R4's running MS windows 7 64 bit. I have tried installing this program and I have the exact same system as you the Aurora R4 and it is running windows 8.1 and when I tried to install the program it gave me the error message  that it was not compatible with this system. The only system running windows 8.1 that this current version of command center works with is Alienware X51 R2. Until dell make the program compatible for the Aurora R4 series that are running windows 8.1, this download is not a viable solution to the problem. Perhaps they are working on making it compatible, but until then the only alternative would be to download a program that allows you to manually change the fan speeds. Dell does this when a new windows system comes out, they wait for the bugs to be fixed and then usually starts making programs compatible with the new system. If you look at dells newest computers that you can buy you will notice most will still come with windows 7.

waterboy59,

"If you look at that specific program download and check under compatibility it states that the program is compatible with Aurora R4's running MS windows 7 64 bit.".

You are reading that page incorrectly. Think of the compatibilty in two sections.

What systems are compatible with AWCC 3.5?
Aurora-R4, X51-R1, X51-R2

What operating system are compatible with AWCC 3.5?
Windows 7/8/8.1

When I try to do the download it starts up the installation, starts to complete it, then stops. It then gives the error message: This installation package is not compatible with this platform. It says this message yet according to the compatibility section my computer is compatible for the installation of it. Any help anyone can give would be appreciated, thanks.

Did you get to the download using your service tag or just by clicking on the link that was posted in here?

Funny enough, I am not able to download it at all.

When I select download it expands and gives me the choice of two files.

I had to click the link. I try using my service tag and having the dell driver analyze utility analyze my system for me to possibly figure out if its the wrong one or something. However when I try to run it it gives me the message that my product is not currently supported by the dell driver analyze utility. It is very frustrating that one person so far says that with the exact same computer as me and running the same operating system, windows 8.1, says that this download works, yet it does not work for my computer. The one program that they have that could double check and make sure it's the right one, dell driver analyze utility, or tell me if there is not a download that would be compatible also does not work.

The actual too does not identify my system, nor does the dell website.

From my system on my page I have to select everything manually

Well i have now officially had it with alienware and Dell. Having been trying to comnmunicate with their support has been a total joke. I have had the pc 3 months and although i normally build my own, i really liked the case and the way it looked. bad mistake, currently i have had graphics problesm, usb 3 problems, the obvious 8.1 fan issues, to name a few. I work in a very large multinational company, and have kept all the correspondance, to pass on to the guys that decide what pc's we should be using.   whether it influences them or not i dont know but i will be doing all i can to make sure that anyone i come accross never buy a Dell again. The name Alienware was the ultimate in PC gaming but to be honest i would refuse one if somebody even gave me one now. Terrible design, terrible uncaring support and on the whole absolute rubbish.

I would not go as far s recommending not to buy Dell [;)] it is only my fourth PC with them but like you are pointing out Alienware definetely stinks. By the way, fixed the fan issue, so quiet [:)] You mentioned issues with your usb, is that something related to devices not being recognized, because I am having that kind of issues, phones, HDDs are not being picked up even though the latest drivers are installed, I have not tried one thing yet, got to the intel website and see if they have a firmware upgrade there, I ll do that now and let you guys know

Ive been using the new Alienware CC Win 8.1 update for 2 weeks now and I am happy to report it seems to have fixed the issue that caused the PCI and HDD fans to ramp up at 100% after pressing the power button to turn on. Previous fixes only banded the problem for 3 days and then the fans would run at 100% again. This has been the longest that  the fans have not went crazy.

I also noticed that it updated the firmware on the alienware fx lighting and fan board.

I took a picture of the firmware update in progress when I did it 2 weeks ago. It appeared I running an older version of the firmware.

The steps below may not be necessary but I like to make sure all the junk from left over programs is completely removed.

1. Uninstall Command Center via control panel -Programs and Features-(do not reboot when asked).

1A. Go to C:\ProgramData\Alienware and delete Alienware folder (if it is there)

1B. Go to C:\Users\xxxYour Account Name Folderxxx\Appdata\local\Alienware (delete AW folder if it is there)

1C. Go to C:\Users\xxxYourAccount Name Folderxxx\Appdata\roaming\Alienware (delete AW folder if it is there)

2. Download and Run CCleaner's (google to find) registry cleaner to remove left over keys from the old Command Center uninstall.

3. Open Regedit (Winkey + R...Type Regedit), press control + F. In find what type Alienware and make sure the keys, data, and value is checked and click find next. After deleting each object (key, value, or data) related to Alienware press F3 to find the next Alienware location and delete. Repeat until done. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING IN THE SYSTEM INFORMATION FOLDER WHEN YOU GET THERE.

4. Download and install the latest AW Command Center from Dell's website. Search by your service tag. Then reboot when prompted

5. Once Rebooted the issue will be solved.

My computer was completely wiped when I took it in for repairs and when they updated the operating system to windows 8.1. Command center has not been added to my computer since then. Still I double checked and followed the above procedures. The problem all are having is that the installation of command center itself cannot complete, and everyone gets the same error message that it is not compatible with the platform. There is some problem with the program, although they claim it is compatible with Aurora R4's and windows 8.1 it is not. They should double check their programming because to ask Dell users that have a limited knowledge of computers to start delving into system files is not acceptable. It could lead to further problems. Please Dell take a second look at the problem, many of your users still have this problem despite the handful of people who claim to have fixed the problem with their Aurora R4's.

Just had this issue happen to me today on my Aurora R4, after an auto-MS patch was loaded and system rebooted.

Came on here, searched for "fans always on", saw the new CC link tied to 8.1, loaded it up, installed, shut system down, started system, and fixed issue.  Thank you very much!!!
