M17x-R2, grounding issue

Trainer? I am pretty sure that Dell would be for having such a wake-up feature as electrocution without being able to turn it off!  It really is strange, because my laptop does not move and therefore cannot have changed connection angles, etc, but a minute ago was shocking both my arms on the metal casing vigorously. There has to be a grounding problem somewhere, but I have tried both power supplies and different power outlets to the same end result. This has happened to me in numerous locations, so it cannot be blamed on my household power either.

I had this issue with one place I lived in. Ended up being the house wiring itself (no grounds attached at outlets). So Dell was not at fault. I moved into a different place and all was good. I figured this out on my own being it was older house which originally prolly didn't have ground wire when built.

Yes it can be prevented. All two prong AC adapters should be plugged into a surge protector strip that uses three prongs and then plugged into a grounded three prong outlet.

The metal chassis in the computer is the ground plane for all of the components. You should not be getting shocked. However, there are quite few reasons for this to be happening. A difference in potential is all it takes. Verify if your outlet is grounded as Dell will ask (this can be done with a muilti-meter or, if not comfortable with that, a simple outlet tester you can get at lowes for $3- it lights up and tells you what the status of your outlets are.).

see since this dosent happen when  on battery or shouldnt it leads me to beleive the problem does infact fall with grounding issue on either the plugs in your home(maybe try another house  to verify this if apartment.. a friends place thats not in same building)  if it still does it then problem lies with the adapter grounding my acer laptop  just pulled this off lastnight when i touched a screw on the power adapter ,funny part is its the same 193 watt Delta Adpter Dell uses just different ends on it , also since on average the voltage @ computer is usually 18 volts~ , I just varified actually with my buddy being a  Electrician that if it actually is a grounding issue  higher voltage/amps can possibly  be present so you might wanna complain to dellienware!.

also on that note maybe this is reason for the M17X R3 being made of plastic instead of magnesium alloy? just a thought .

i am having the same problem since a very long time,no use how much i tried it does not stop.mine just gives a minor electric shocks some times

If the problem is as severe as you say it is, then all you need to do is sit on a rubber mat of some sort and keep shoes on with rubber soles ) You are completing a circuit otherwise )  

See my post above, test the outlet and if it passes, then send the computer back for repair.

The rubber mat solution is the perfect one. Thanks. No more shock treatment
