Only if the the system shipped with a sticker on it stating "active pen support".
Otherwise, no.

I no longer have the box, but I was gaurenteed when I made the purchase that it would work. Is there any other way to tell? It's not connecting properly.

It's not the box you need to look at -- if the system did not ship with a "pen compatible" sticker on it (on the palmrest), it's a touch screen - not a digitizing panel you'd need for a pen.
Either the sticker is there or you would have had to remove it -- if neither is the case, you can't use an active pen on the system.
