P2717H, buttons are not working, Apple Mac Mini

There are five buttons on the bottom right corner of the monitor, four control buttons plus one power button. None seems working, including the power button.  I think OSD lock will only affect the four control buttons and leaving the power button working, but in my case the power button does nothing.

Here's what I observed:
  • When I plug in the power cable, the light on the power button of the monitor lights up. But pressing the power button does nothing, not even turning off the monitor. I've tried pressing and holding the power button for various length of time (6s, 10s, 15s, etc), nothing happened.
  • When the monitor is on, it displays content as expected.
  • When the monitor is on, none of the four control buttons work. When I press any of the four control buttons, there is no "lock" icon appearing in the centre of the screen. When I press any of the control buttons for various length of time (6s, 10s, 15s, etc), nothing happened. I guess this means it's not simply an OSD lock issue.
  • After sometime without interacting with the Mac computer, the monitor will automatically go to "power saving" mode and there is no way for me to get it out of that mode without unplug the power cable and plug it back in again.
I'm using a U2414H side by side with this one. I also tried to lock and unlock the OSD of the U2414H monitor, all worked as expected. Everything worked fine when I first plugged the P2717H monitor in last Saturday, and I even used the control menu to adjust the display mode. But now all buttons are not working.

To summarize, the monitor is displaying everything as expected but after sometime of inactivity, it will go into the PSM and I cannot activate the monitor without touching the power cable. None of the buttons, including the power button, is working.  Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

For my notes, send me via Private Message the P2717H service tag number.

Check the Dell validated operating system drivers listed. Neither the P2717H nor the U2414H were ever validated by Dell with the Apple proprietary hardware and software. All we provided were true Windows PC testing and drivers. All we can provide for Apple hardware and software is "best guess" support.

The video cable provided with the U2414H is technically DP to mDP, not DP to Thunderbolt.

* Turn all three off (P2717H, U2414H, Mac Mini)
* Disconnect all P2717H and U2414H cables from the Mac Mini

Run the P2717H Self-Test and BID (Built-in Diagnostics)
* Disconnect every cable from the P2717H (including the power cable)
* Press and hold in the P2717H power button for 10 seconds
* Reconnect only the power cable to the P2717H
* Press the P2717H power button. Does it work? If yes, it should turn on and show, "No DP cable" message
* Press the far left Button 1. If the button worked, a gray screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A red screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A green screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A blue screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A black screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A white screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A text screen appears
* To exit, press Button 1 again

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply. But the buttons are not working.

I've also tried using a HDMI to thunderbolt cable to connect the P2717H to the Mac mini and using the VGA cable to connect the P2717H to my VAIO notebook running ubuntu and my HP notebook running Win 7. Nothing changed.

When I first made the connection, the monitor works as expected but all buttons are not working. After a while, the monitor will suddenly go dark and the indicator light on the power button will also go off. Just as if the monitor has been turned off. Sever seconds later, the display will come back and a message will also popup on the screen indicating the port that is connected (HDMI, VGA etc.) And after several seconds, it will go dark and back on again. This happened several times. But sometimes when the display comes back, the buttons start working (all buttons, including the power button).

What should I do?

If the standalone P2717H Self-Test and BID (Built-in Diagnostics) pass, then the monitor itself is functional. If the BID fails, read this.

* Disconnect every cable from the P2717H (including the power cable)
* Press and hold in the P2717H power button for 10 seconds
* Reconnect only the power cable to the P2717H
* Press the P2717H power button. Does it work?
* Press the far left Button 1. If the button worked, a gray screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A red screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A green screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A blue screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A black screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A white screen appears
* Press Button 1 again. A text screen appears
* To exit, press Button 1 again
