XPS 15-9570, keyboard skipping keys

Hi,

I saw the post about the XPS 13 9370 having this same issue. I'm also experiencing it with my XPS 15 9570. It looks like a BIOS update fixed it for that machine. Do we know when there will be an update for the 9570 o address this issue?

well spotted ! i will be careful to see if it persist :)

Hehe. :)

To be fair, it's actually a lot better for me the last few days, no idea why, no recent updates. The other day it was terrible, so maybe just variance.

I don't know how you even came up with this weird solution, but after following your steps, my keyboard issues have stopped as well! This is very bizarre and not sure why the keyboard issue should be tied to a graphics setting; but hey, if it works, it works.

Still would like Dell to fully investigate this. But, thanks @jeking3 for the seemingly random but very helpful solution. :smileyhappy:

Thanks but Dell came up with it, not me.  I should mention it seems to mostly take care of the problem but it can still happen occasionally, according to my wife who is now using the laptop.  At least it's tolerable now.

I also have this missing keystroke issue, but not all the time.
I looked at other Dell threads and in the XPS 9370 keyboard thread someone mentioned that they have the issue only after the laptop was shut down.
I had this frustrating issue the whole day today, after my laptop was shut down and then hibernated.
So I tried to put the laptop to sleep for half an hour, and now after resuming from sleep my keyboard works OK, no missing keystrokes!

Can anyone try to put the laptop to sleep for some time and see if that helps?

I'll definitely try the Panel self refresh trick if the issue comes back.

I just received a new Dell XPS 15 9570 (i5 base model) which I am setting up for my wife. The keyboard was missing keystrokes "out of the box." The fix from jeking3 seemed to work for me as well. Thank you!

Precision 5530 - the fix with graphics worked for me. Thank you!

What does the Power Self-Refresh setting do? It's a great fix that is worth sacrificing something else for, but what exactly are we sacrificing? Just for clarity's sake. Cheers :)

I think the panel self refresh option makes screen refresh less often if there is no screen movement, so it consumes less power.

In my old Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop panel self refresh option could reduce the power consumption by 1 watt, which is not a small thing...

New BIOS 1.3.0 out but it doesn't mention anything about keyboard fixes :(

Strange you say this - I also thought my laptop got a bit faster after disabling panel self refresh, but I thought it must be me because that doesn't make sense.

Maybe it's some weird Intel GPU driver bug that causes keystrokes to be missed?

i think because it was causing an input lag... at least thats my theory

Hm, could be...

Whenever the panel self refresh was doing its thing (skipping a refresh frame), the keyboard would skip a key as well. And it would happen only if the key was pressed at the exact same moment when the display frame was skipped. Or something like that...

I suppose Dell engineers (and Intel's!) need to sort out those mixed up overlaps between the keyboard and the screen.

Is it me or newest BIOS update fixed that?

I've seen the panel refresh re-enable itself.  I'm not sure under what circumstances, but it explains why my wife's laptop started missing keyclicks again.
