U2518D, HDR setup

Just had my monitor replaced by Dell with a newer model U2518D.

Read through the FAQ Dell HDR in the forum but still a bit confused about HDR.

Just received it so haven't had time to set it up. Before I do just need to clarify a few things.

Playback HDR compliant content such as retail 4K UHD movies on PC. What cable should I use to connect the monitor to the PC. Will the supplied DP 1.2 be ok for displaying HDR content or will I heed to use HDMI 2.0? Provided. HDR is enabled in Windows 10. HDR enabled on monitor and a HDR capable player (DVDFab Player 5) is used. Along with HDR complient GTX 1070 video card.

FAQ mentions that HDR requires HDMI 2.0a and Displayport 1.4 Yet monitor specifications show it only has displayport 1.2

Correct, the U2518D DP and mDP in ports and cable are 1.2. You must use the U2518D HDMI 2.0 in port.

GTX 1070 HDMI out port --> High-Speed HDMI to HDMI cable --> U2518D HDMI in port

I've connected the U2518 Monitor to PC via High Speed HDMI 2.0 cable.

I have enabled HDR on the U2518D Monitor (Smart HDR on) and set Windows 10 Display setting HDR and WCG to ON.

When in Windows the screen keeps fading from Very bright and vibrant to Dark and washed then back to very bright and vibrant again. Every couple of minutes. Is there anything I can to do to fix this?

Under Windows 10 Advanced Display Settings it shows the following. Which are the graphics card defaults:

  • Active Signal Resolution: 2560x1440
  • Refresh rate (Hz): 59 Hz
  • Bit depth: 12-bit
  • Color format: RGB
  • Color space: High dynamic range (HDR)

Also running the latest Nvidia 399.24 drivers and have all the Windows 10 updates installed.

Non-HDR content like the Windows desktop, Windows backgrounds, Windows basic applications, will always look bad if HDR is turned On. Only dedicated HDR movies and HDR games will utilize/show the HDR. Which is why when you go back to the non-HDR Windows, you have to turn HDR Off.

So what HDR movies or HDR games are you testing?

The problem I am having with this new monitor is that the screen seems to be constantly auto dimming. Where the screen in HDR mode continually going dim then bright then back to dim every 2 minutes. I've checked the settings in windows for Adaptive Brightness and can't see any "Adjust my screen brightness automatically" settings.

Monitor is

  • Revision A05
  • Manufactured date: July 2018
  • Firmware: M2T103

Any ideas on this problem?

"Where the screen in HDR mode continually going dim then bright then back to dim every 2 minutes"

On the non-HDR windows desktop? Or when actually running an HDR move or HDR game?

When NOT actually running an HDR move or HDR game, HDR should be OFF.

Had my monitor replaced recently by Dell with a new U2518D that supports HDR. Problem is that when I enable HDR in Windows 10, the brightness continually fluctuates to dim then bright then dim every 2 minutes. Happens also when watching movies and videos with HDR enabled software. Once I disable HDR in Windows back to SDR there is no problem.

I've connected the U2518D to PC via High Speed HDMI 2.0 cable. Enabled HDR on the U2518D Monitor (Smart HDR on) and set Windows 10. Display setting HDR and WCG to ON. Also have the default U2518D Color Profile D6500 installed.

Monitor is

  • Revision A05
  • Manufactured date: July 2018
  • Firmware: M2T103

OS is Windows 10 1803 with all the latest updates installed and video card is Nvidia GTX 1070. Had a look though the forum and noticed this post having similar issue with HDR enabled.

When on the Windows 10 desktop, using applications like YouTube, Yahoo mail, Google Chrome browser, Office, you must turn HDR OFF. Do this and tell me if the dim/bright/dim still happens.

As I already mentioned in my first post when I turn off HDR setting in windows everything is fine no continually going bright then dim then bright every two minutes. Its just when I trun on HDR screen will continually go dim/bright/dime etc.

Your suggestion is only turn on HDR when watching a video/movie or playing a game that supports HDR. Ignore the constant changing brignthes an just watch/play everything in full screen. Not in a smaller window.

HDR movie and HDR games are designed to be used in full screen. By shrinking the HDR content to a smaller window, you are trying to use the HDR content and the non-HDR windows desktop and non-HDR applications simultaneously. You cannot mix the two contrary technologies. It is either;
* HDR off, use non-HDR windows desktop and non-HDR applications
* HDR on, use HDR movie or HDR game in full screen

Definitely something wrong when I enable HDR in Windows 10 1803. As I said when in my first post the display contrast constantly fades from bright and vibrant to dark and washed out then back to bright again every two minutes. Even when HDR is enabled and detected when playing back the video in full screen mode.

When I turn HDR off the screen is perfect in SDR mode.

Not sure if the constantly changing contrast problem when HDR is enabled lies with the monitor, default Color Management ICC profile, video card settings or Windows itself?
