MDS 9509 monitoring using freeware tools

Hi All,

Has anyone setup a freeware monitoring tool to track performance statistics for an MDS switch? We have an MDS-9509, and I'm interested in particular in setting up either MRTG or Hobbit to monitor the port utilization and throughput, as well as switch CPU and memory usage. I'd rather not have to buy FM server since we already use these free tools to monitor our hosts and other Cisco networking gear.

Thanks,
Eddy

Eddy,
You don't have to buy FM Server to use it to manage or monitor one switch at a time. You only need the FM Server license to continuously monitor switches and manage more than one switch at a time. CiscoKid has some good posts that explain the functionality of FM Server in a stand alone mode.

AranH,

Thanks for the reply. I currently use FM to get real-time stats, but in order to get historical performance monitoring don't you need an FM license? When I try to create a flow I get an error that no Fabric Manager license is available.

I'd be very interested to hear from folks who are using MRTG or Hobbit to monitor their MDS.

Thanks,
Eddy

Yes, you would need the license to capture the performance stats via Performance Manager.

I haven't heard of anyone successfully using any MRTG or Hobbit to monitor the MDS. I will bounce this off Cisco Engineering to see if they have any experience with these tools with MDS or any recommendations.

Thank you.

I've pinged Cisco for a response to anything that has been tested or recommended. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Thank you.

There aren't any recommendation from either Cisco or EMC on freeware tools to use. According to Cisco no matter which freeware tool you use, you would still need the FMS license to correctly pull the stats from the switch. If you buy the FMS license, you'd be better off using Performance Manager on the switch. EMC Control Center can also would provide some MDS performance stats without a FMS license.

Thank you.

Hello,

I've talked to one customer who uses MRTG to do his tracking and it works for him. As I've stated there is no official EMC or Cisco tracking tool but MRTG worked for this customer. You might want to investigate it and see if it works for you.

Thank you.
