7.6.1 and DataDomain
Which parts of the 7.6.1 new functionality are tied to the Boost License? That is if I don't get the Boost license(not in budget yet) which pieces can I expect to be able to use? And I mean outside of the 30 day test window.

Only available via the enabler. That's the performance optimization feature (see above).

John - The NetWorker functionality that is enabled by the new Data Domain Device type enabler is:
1) Optimized performance via the Distributed Segment Processing and compression (Boost code)
2) Simplified Administration via NetWorker Management Console
3) Replication management via Clone Controlled Replication.
Without the new enabler, you can continue to use Data Domain when it's configured as a VTL or a disk target (via NFS/CIFS). In these cases NetWorker treats DD as a generic tape library (VTL using autochangers) or a generic disk device (AFTD using DBO).
Also, Checkpoint Restart, scheduled cloning, AFTD enhancements are independent of the new Data Domain Device type enabler. These features can be used with DD as a VTL or AFTD.

That helps.. One more question though. Is the new network optimization also part of the new release or only available through the enabler? Just a FYI.. I'm on a new DD690 and on Networker 7.6.0.. I'm migrating data over from my DL3D and am looking at anything to improve performance.

Well thats a bummer. I wish EMC would come out with a partial license then of one with everything but Boost. I quite frankly don't need boost, and the price I was quoted is quite pricey for the features that I would actually use. I will say though, that I believe you all are going in the right direction with some of your updates. Oh well maybe next year.

John, on behalf of the team, thank you. Comments like this are validation of why we do what we do.
For this initial release we chose to tie all of the new functionality to the new Data Domain enabler, and that enabler is tied to use of the Data Domain Boost software. From a competitive perspective it's similar to the NBU/OST/Boost apporach, where optimized performance and replication are 'enabled' via the Enterprise Disk license. From a Go-To-Market perspective we wanted to create clear division between the feature support for the existing VTL/DBO configurations and features for the new Data Domain Device type (using Boost) so sales and customers alike could understand this significant change. BTW, I intentionally set the USLP significantly below the NBU Enterprise Disk USLP.
Based upon market demand and customer experience we'll learn more about how customers use the new capabilities. Clearly, not every customer has a performance problem. And not every customer has a replication requirement. And while we expect customer demand for both features to be high, only time will tell us if the current packaging will be an obstacle.
One more note: Consider the new Capacity Licensing option for NetWorker. With capacity licensing, all of the complexities of feature set and enablers is eliminated.
