multi terrabyte filesystems (16TB+)

We're looking for a solution to store a large number of big media files to a Celerra

Customer doesn't care where the file resides, he just want's a single share to store it's large number of 3D HD video files on.

Does EMC has a product like the F5 ARX to do dynamic capacity balancing to create one large virtual file server spread over different datamovers and filesystemes.

Rainfinity File Virtualisation looks like it's primary use is file migration, not dynamic capacity balancing.

Hi,

your current choices depend on whether your appliation is able to use subdirectories.

Typically you would combine multiple 16TB file systems into one "share entry point" using NMFS or DFS root - then each fs looks like a subdirectory.

The other option would be to create one large (16TB max) file system and move older files transparently to multiple other "archive" file systems using EMC Rainfinity FMA.

There a file would get replaced by a 8KB stub and when a client accesses it it gets read passthrough without the client noticing.

The archived files could be on a Celerra file system (same or different data mover / Celerra) or a Centera or a Atmos could storage or a Data Domain.

You could also built something like that yourself using symbolic (wide) links - just not as transparent.

Also keep in mind the max capacity per data mover - you might have to use multiple DM's

We're looking into the G8 version with DART 6.0 with a max of 256TB per DM.

We've used the FMA a couple of times and it has a nice feature to write it to a storage pool which can consist of different shares.

Problem is that for every project they finish, they have to create a new policy to archive this project.

Customer would like to just copy the project from share 1 to share 2 and doesn't want to care about the size of an individual folder/share.

Even in NAS 6.0 the max size of a single FS is still 16 TB

we know, that's why we're looking for a solution to stripe/concatenate a couple of 16TB's to create one big filesystem.

As there is limit for the size of a single file system, creating a joint point for multiple file systems sounds the only solution.

DFS could be considered.
