Does Avamar support lan-less backup when backup vSphere 4.0
it seems when backup VMware vSphere 4, avamar uses lan backup. but symantec or Vizioncore seems support this feature.

No, avamar not supports Lan-Less backup.
Avamar server is not a tape drive based backup like others to stream data to the direct attached tape drive. Avamar client process data for deduplicate and sent over network to the Avamar server. Most of the time it will not choke network as it is not sending raw data.
