VSI and ACU utility

Hello,

i would like to give my vSphere admin VSI read/only access to my VNX/VMAX. They should not be able to create any new LUNs/file systems ..nothing but i want them to be able to identify LUNs/symmetrix device IDs ..etc. Can i lock it down to this type of access with ACU ?

Thanks

There a couple of ways to accomplish this objective:

1) You can install the VSI Storage Viewer (SV) feature to enable read-only access to information about Symmetrix and VNX/CLARiiON storage for datastores and RDMs. Don't install the Storage Pool Management (SPM) feature or the Unified Storage Management (USM) features of VSI. These are the provisioning features of VSI; without them VSI cannot be used to create new LUNs or file systems.

2) If you do install USM, but you want to enforce read-only access to particular VNX/VNXe/CLARiiON/Celerra storage systems, you can use the Access Control Utility (ACU) to define an access profile that has access to 'No Storage Pools' on a particular storage system to disable the ability to provision new LUNs or file systems on that storage system with USM. Note that ACU cannot be used to define access policies for Symmetrix storage.

Thanks John. Is ACU available in VSI 5.0 only, if yes when it will be available on PowerLink. Is it supported with vSphere 4.1 ?

VSI v5 is now live on Powerlink. Yes it supports vSphere 4.1.

ACU is available in VSI Unified Storage Management 4.2 as well as 5.0. Both versions support vSphere 4.1.

Symmetrix / VMAX is supported as well with ACU since June 2012 release 5.3 and above. Storage Models were added with every release and there is support for VPLEX, XtremIO in addition to those that were supported already.
