DMX - VMAX (VM migration)
IHAC on data center migration and consolidation.
The original data center to be decomissioned after data moved to a new data center (new DC location is 15 miles away)
Original DC - has DMX3 with 20 VM Production host
New DC - New VMAX with 20 new host
Customer ruled out the storage based migration like SRDF/OpenReplicator due to contract issues between the third party service providers.
Any thoughts and best approach on host based migration especially on VM's?
Many thanks in advance!!!

if latency is low and plenty of bandwidth, could use storage vMotion for VMs. Same could apply to other host based tools like native LVM mirroring or PowerPath Migration Enabler.

We do not have FIBRE LINK -but- network link is available between the DC's !

IS storage level VMotion requires any storage level remediation effort from ORIGINAL DC (which was ruled out by customer)?
No LVM is used currently. Is PowerPath Migration Enabler helps?
Thanks in advance !

not sure i understand what you are asking. In order to use storage vMotion you will need to present VMAX storage accross the link to the cluster at Original DC. What kind of switch infrastructure at both DCs ?
PowerPath migration enabler works really well, we've used it on Windows and Linux clients to migrate from DMX3 to VMAX online.(it does require at outage for MS Clusters)

how are you going to present fiber channel storage over IP ? Do you have SAN switches that support FCIP ?

Hi Dynamox
*since it is VMware environment; no powerpath installed
Only high bandwidth network connectivity available.
Fibre link connection are under discussion though but pl note not array level replication completely ruled out.
**Any other options where we can replicate data through network considering both as STANDALONE DataCenter?

maybe ESX based IP replication solution (Double Take ? )
