VMAX boot LUN migration using VLUN migration

Hi Everyone,

I have been loking for information to find out if it is possbile to utilize VLUN migration to migrate a WIndows boot LUN (while server is online)  to a different disk group and new device;i understand that it can be done from a devie perspective; what I need to find out if this can be done with a Windows boot volume and while the server is online; or this a disruptice operation.

If this is not an option is there any options to doing a a live migration of the devive to another device. Ultimatelly my goal isto move this LUN off the current disk group and onto another.

Thank You for any assistance.

Just as a follow up; you can utilize VLUN migration to migrate a Windows Boot LUN successfully and with out interruption of service; thin to thin or thick to thick; but not STD to TDEV as many are hoping to do.

HI,

To be honest, I have not tried this in production. I believe VLUN migration should not have any problem if its a boot lun or some other lun.

Online migration of boot lun is not recommended (if you are considering some other technology, ppme, OM, or Clone) due to the page file.

The main concern in the boot lun migrations is the issues with Page File. We have not tried with Virtual LUN Migration.

You cannot use host based migration utilities like PPME or Open Migrator since these explicitly provide that online migration of boot luns are not supported.

You would need to look at the options like Timefinder clone after powering off the Server. In case of any issues in booting up from the target lun, You may have to again boot from the source lun, Reduce the server to a single path, uninstall Powerpath, boot the server with a single path without Powerpath, Power it off, and then replicate the boot lun using Timefinder clone.

If you are moving the luns from one Storage Array to another, you can follow EMC Primus emc278557  "Is replication of Boot LUN in Boot from SAN recommended using Symmetrix Remote Data Facility/Synchronization (SRDF/S) or Open Replicator (OR) while the source LUN is online?"

This primus details the steps that should be followed in Boot lun migrations.

Saurabh,

thanks for your comment; i am aware i cannot use any host migration tools.

Sanjeev,

the server in question is a DR box; so  the plan now is to turn it off; which allows me to indeed use TF/Clone to havea backup copy; then i will try to VLUN migrate live to see if it fails or not.

thanks for your reply.

Hi

I would like to know the process involved in this. I used VLUN Migration for retiering device from one pool to another pool. In this process the LUN ID and WWN remains same. I am not sure if the VLUN migration lets you select a Device to migrate data onto.

Thanks,

Sat

VLUN just moves the data associated with the device from one place to another, whether it is thin or thick. The front-end geometry does not change--just the location of the data. VLUN cannot move data from one logical device to another. It just moves the physical location of the data that is associated with the logical Symmetrix device
