Simple Tape Copy - How to create clone job

I see that you have to create a clone job, but I'm attempting to copy one tape (17 full savesets) to another tape.

The volume number is 104, media pool is VMSONSITE.  I tried under Configuration Tab, create new under Clone.

Name=Tape Copy, Write Clone data to pool: Default Clone

Check - Enable

Start time 11:40am

Monthly by date (Day 11)   Waited and nothing happened and nothing appeared in Monitoring Tab under Log

Save set Filters Tab

Group-VMSONSITE

Clients-My only choice

Pools-Default Clone

Then, under Media Tab, tried to edit Media Pool-Default Clone, to add VMSONSITE as Data Source, Target device to pick my tape drive and when I try to click on OK, I get Error: NSR pool Default Clone may not be modified.  Do I need to just create net Media Pool and then it will let me modify?

Does it sound like I'm on the right track if I want this job to run "On-Demand" then disable when done, re-enable and change date/time when I want it to run?

Also, on a side note, how many concurrent recover sessions can run at once if reading from tape, and what is recommendation?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi David,

You are correct:  You would need 2 tape drives to perform the cloning operation.   If you really need two copies and you only have one tape drive, then you would need to recover the data somewhere and back it up again to a new tape and backup everything twice going forward.  Neither is really practical though, so you're probably better off either sticking with one copy of the backed up data or getting another tape drive.

Hi Dave,

It looks to me like your data didn't clone because you didn't change the "limit number of save set clones" from the default which is '1'.  Since the data you want to clone is already in the default clone pool once, there is nothing more to be cloned.  If your data is not already in the default clone pool, then there was no cloning because you defined that pool in the criteria for saveset selection.  You can use the 'Preview Save Set Selection' button to help you see what would be cloned according to the criteria you have chosen.

If you want to clone everything from one backup pool, then select only that pool in the save set filters and leave the rest untouched.  If you want to clone everything from a particular group or client, then fill out only those sections.  Don't get confused between the source of your data and your destination (target) pool for copying the data.  If you wish to have more than one copy of the same saveset in the same pool you can, but you need to change that 'limit number of save set clones' to more than 1.  Also, you need to have enough volumes available in that pool as NetWorker will not write the same saveset twice to the same volume.

You might want to check out the NetWorker Cloning Integration Guide which explains it all better than I can.

Bobby,

Thanks for the information. I found exactly what I need on page 59 of your attached document, but now think that since I only have 1 tape drive, this still will not work (Requirements: A Minimum of two Storage devices must be enabled. One to read the existing data and one to write the cloned data.

If I’m wrong about the above assumption, I keep noticing in “Show Manual Clone History” Failed for each attempt that I have made.

Thanks,

Dave
