VNX and Windows Server 2012

Anyone know what Flare Code on the VNX you need to have to support WIndows 2012? and what ver of PowerPath supports it too?

William,

To answer your question, always look to the E-Lab Interoperability Matrix updated monthly  There are several ways to generate the requested information as follows:

https://elabnavigator.emc.com/do/navigator.jsp

1) From the "Advanced Query" tab, build your query.

a) Every detail you provide refines the results are returned

b) For instance, you can build you query as follows:

- Server -> Click on "Operating System"

- Under "Microsoft" -> check "Windows 2012"

- Click on the "Add to Cart" button

If you were to click on "Get Results" now, you'd return every match that included Windows 2012 and would have to search for an exact match.  Or you can continue to refine it by adding more details about your environment such as:

- Storage -> Storage Array and/or Operating Environment

- Server -> Host Bus Adapter

- Server -> Host System

c) Once you click on "Get Results", the two categories you will be interested in are:

- Base Connectivity (this will confirm that the combination of array/OE, Host System, OS, etc are supported or not)

- Path Management Software (this will return results for the version of PowerPath that is supported)

d) Also important, assuming it is supported, also pay attention to the footnotes as it will often provide important caveats

2) Other methods of obtaining the same from the E-Lab Interoperability Navigator are:

a) Via the "Solutions and Wizards" tab

b) From the "PDFs and Guides" tab which is basically a complete dump of the database grouped by various categories

In summary, you will find that Windows 2012 is supported even with older arrays and that assuming all else such as HBA model/driver/firmware, Host System, etc. align to the ESM, PowerPath v5.5 P1 is the version compatible with Windows 2012.

EMC eLab has all specifications.. but at a basic level, all versions of VNX OE are supported with Windows 2012.

PowerPath 5.5 SP1 is supported with Windows 2012

Just a quick followup, do I need to install powerpath on the guest too if I am planning on connecting storage directly to the VM? Something similar to RDM in VMWare (can't recollect the exact term).

If you are planning to use virtual fibrechannel adapters in the guest VM on Windows 2012 Hyper-V, then yes, you should use PowerPath or other MPIO.  In nearly every other case I can think of, you would not use MPIO inside the guest.

That's what I was thinking too, thanks for the confirmation. Hope EMC comes up with a new version of Powerpath/VE for windows 2012 soon.

What exactly are you looking for?

A version of PowerPath that runs on the Win2012 host partition, to perform MPIO for the host and all VMs on that host? (ie: PowerPath/VE)

Or for a version of PowerPath that runs inside of VMs that are running on Win2012? (ie: PowerPath)

Ya, I want to see a version of PP that runs on VMs and host. But I guess thats what individual installation of powerpath does on VMs and Hosts.

Thanks again for the clarification.

Yes, the current version of PowerPath 5.5SP1 will run on the Windows Server 2012 host and manage MPIO for all guest VMs.  You only need to add PowerPath to the guest if you are using Virtual FibreChannel in that particular guest.  In that case, you just need to use the correct PowerPath version for the guest OS.
