Expanding a Storage Pool - good practices

Hi

I have been tasked with increasing a Clariion Cx4 Storage Pool could anyone answer the following questions:

  • Is the process disruptive?

  • What are the performance implications of expanding a storage pool?

  • Any good practices that I should comply with?

Thanks

  • Is the process disruptive?
    • Usually Not (but see the kb articles I have posted below)

  • What are the performance implications of expanding a storage pool?
    • Unfortunately the performance will not be as good as a newly bound pool, its hard to explain my best analogy is its almost like a concanated meta lun (slower) over a striped meta lun (faster) With a pool expansion on Rel 30 you are adding a bit more storage (a new feature in Rel 32 for VNX called rebalancing was adding to allow for restriping)

  • Any good practices that I should comply with?
    • Speaking from the software point of view you need to pay attention to ensure you are running the latest Rel 30 code (Rel 30 P525) and whether or not you might need the EPC Enabler
    • See KB articles emc289254, emc263403, ETA emc289336
    • I cannot stress how important it is to be on latest Rel 30 for Virtual Provisioning

Hi Grearoid,

Just want to confirm something. If I have a 40 drive R5 pool, and I expand it with another 40 drives, won't I get the same performance that I used to get before the expansion. The rule-of-thumb is to expand the pool with the same number of drives that you used to create the pool initially.

Once again the important question is

What code is the array running

Without that information I cannot give you a definate answer

If release 32 then the performance will be the same or better

If older code then the performance maybe the same or worse
