fast (bar code) inventory through NMC
Until Networker 7.4.5, we were able to perform swift jukebox
inventories based on bar code labels though the NMC GUI. Since we
migrated to 7.5.2 in 2010, this was no more possible: Networker would
fetch each tape into the drive and would perform its inventory based
on the inner tape label, although the outer barcode label is
available, and can be utilized with the workaround of doing a command
line "nsrjb -II" (fast inventory) operation.
We (and wouldn't most other customers agree?) would prefer that the
NMC GUI defaults to attempt fast inventory operations utilizing the
bar code label.
Opinions welcome.
Regards, Thomas

Are you using barcode or do you assign custom labels? I never missed that, but this might be due to a fact that I do not use GUI for library operations (and inventory is something that I don't have to do, but I can assume those shops using tape and having multiple exports and imports might feel differently).

We are using barcode labels, and we do not use auto media management.
I also do many operations through CLI, but in my team some do prefer the GUI.

Get rid of the team
Quick inventory will make sense if change in library is picked up (sensed by CDI) so inventory picked up by sjirdtag eqvivalent can be matched against mdb inventory (and be appropriatelly updated). I'm not aware of quick inventory option from GUI, but I believe RFE exists for that one - you should check it with support. I can't say if this is in place in NW8 or not since I didn't use it yet, but it's worth to check with EMC if there is need to have it implemented in GUI as well.
