Ports Required Specifically for restoration in Networker

Hi All

I am curious to know the ports required for a restoration from Networker for a client behind a firewall.

I know the port range defined is 7937 - 9936, 111 but i assume these are for backups.

Do these include any specific ports required for restoration ? if so, i would like to know the port numbers.

Actually, we  will be restoring a client behind the firewall which is in a different network segement, however the destination client is in the same segement. Since the recover process runs on the destination and browses its index from the backup server  i assume there should not be any port requirement for restoration from the source client. The service ports (listening ports) you mention are used by NW in general. The NW client process itself uses 7937 & 7938. These ports must always be open. 111 is the port the portmapper uses.

7937 - 9936 is is the default range for listening ports . Of course, one could calculate each port separately but a client would need less than 10 listening ports. So you can reduce the range dramatically

The connection ports (outgoing ports) are not considered to be dangerous. NW uses much more of these ports and the default range is handled by the system (0-0).

Thanks for the prompt reply Bingo.

But i would like to know whether i would require any ports opened now with the source client for restoration.

Since the recover process runs on the destination and browses its index from the backup server i assume there should not be any port requirement for restoration from the source client, and just the ports would be required to be opened from the destination bi-directionally.

I was probably a bit too abstract. You do not need the source client at all.

Now a little bit more of theory ;-) - What would happen if the source client would have been removed? - If his ports would also be used, you would never ne able to recover data unless you rebuild it.
