Exchange 2010 persistent snapshots for incremental backups
Hi,
I am implementing solutions for Exchange 2010 with NMM 3.0 and the requirement is
1) To have a full backup once in a week and incremental backups on all other days of the week.
2) Create 3 snapshots a day and rollover one of it to tape and retain the two other snapshots on Exchange server for a week.
As per the EMC documentation, persistent snapshots can be created only with Full backup schedule. Does that mean, I should configure Full backups everyday to have snapshots as per my requirement? is there any other way to create snapshots without changing the backup schedule to daily full?
Can someone help me on this.
Thanks

Hi Sreekanth,
Yes, you are right. The only way to retain snapshots is to take full level backup, as incremental-persistent-snapshots are not supported.
you should be creating a full backup snapshots every time, besides, keeping a snapshot for a week, I don't find it the best approach.
Why not instead, you take always full backup, and roll them over to Data Domain instead (if available) and then set expiration date of one week?
Also note the dependency between full and incremental. If you are taking incremental, with intention to delete them, you could be breaking the backup cycle in NetWorker so, my advice, if you intend to retain snapshots is take always FULL and in that case there is no problem in managing snapshots at your wish, however these will have to be FULL.
Thank you,
Carlos

Thank you very much for your quick reply Carlos . So I need to create two groups for the client.
1) Group1 with Full backup once a week schedule with snapshot policy having "Retain Snapshots" value to be greater than 1.
2) Group2 with Incremental backups with snapshot policy having "Retain Snapshots" value to be 0.
Thanks

Hi Sreedanth,
I would rather create one group with normal cycle (1 full+incrementals) with "Retain Snapshots=0" and the second one with Retain Snapshots=1, as in this case you can set different retention for the clients on each group, with no risk to break the backup cycles.
Bear in mind that the indexes are saved against the DAG (virtual) client, and not the physicals, so in order to have different retention/browse times, you need to have one DAG client on each group to have the indexes correctly.
Thank you,
Carlos
