Assistance with KTN-STL4 CX Series for a school
Good day to all,
I work for a school and a teacher donated two of these units:
Manufacturer: Dell EMC
P/N: KTN-STL4
15x 146GB drives
Fibre channel speed: 15K 2/4Gb
STL4 enclosure
Dims: 15"(D) x 18.525"(W) x 5.125"(H)
P/N: 100-562-126 (2)
Controller module
P/N: T58072
P/N: T57270
In our school I work with HP hardware but we welcome all donations to our school. Since our budget is low I doing some ebay research on how to make these two EMC enclosures work, so my questions are:
I see two connector per controller that looks like a CX4 connector. Are they?
Are each of those CX4 connectors 4Gbit/s each (for a total of 8Gbit per controller) or 2Gbit/s each (for a total of 4Gb per controller)?
Im planning to get a second hand 4Gbit FC switch and connect the EMC and the Servers to that switch. Instead of using fiber cables, can I use those CX4-like connectors? I will need to get the Gbics of course.
Can I get HBAs that I can use with direct attach cables?
If someone can recommend a cheap ebay fiber switch, server nics and gbics, please let me know.
My findings so far:

each cable operates at 2Gbit.

P/N: 100-562-126 is the link control card for DAE3P, so it should be a DAE3P disk enclosure. You can search other P/Ns by yourself on EMC PCD (Parts Compatibility Database): https://alliance.emc.com/PCDPartners/pl.asp
How many servers do you have? You don't have to buy a SAN switch if you have only one or two servers. You can connect them just like a DAS (direct-attached storage).
The part numbers of CX4 SFP should be 019-078-032 (1/2/4G) or 019-078-042 (2/4/8G). You can search their P/N directly on eBay.
BTW, only a DAE can not boot itself. You also need a CX3 or CX4 SPE (Storage Processor Enclosure).

Hi Roger, this is what it was donated to us.
http://www.dougdeals.com/p-58509-emc-ktn-stl4-4gb-fibre-channel-storage-array-san-w-15x-146gb-15k-drives.aspx
Currently we want to connect 4 servers, potentially 6.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Ok, quite a few servers, so you still need to get a SAN switch.

You also need a CX3 or CX4 SPE (Storage Processor Enclosure), with its Vault disks (the storage OS resides in the first five disks of the first DAE).

CX3-10/20/40 SPE:
CX3-80 SPE:
CX4-120/240/480 SPE:
CX4-960 SPE:
CX3-80 and CX4-960 might be too much high-end, CX3-10 or CX4-120 should be enough for you. For the information about Vault disks and its operating system (called FLARE), you can refer to my previous posts:

Interesting, so you are saying that I have the hard disks units but i do not have the "brains" unit? and the brains unit is what you are showing me in those pictures.

Yes. you can refer to the EMC whitepaper for the details:
http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h5534-intro-clariion-cx4-series-ultraflex-tech-wp.pdf
One SPE, one DAE and on SPS (standby battery) is the minimum configuration:
Also please mark my answers as "correct/helpful" if it helps. Thanks.

So this is an incomplete donation. Well, you cannot go angry with a person who donated this. As you can never go angry with something that did not cost you a penny. Now we have to find a CX/SPS units and see the pricing.
Is FLARE something you buy or is it something you download for free? for such older units?
Thanks again for all the kind help you have been providing to me all this time.

Like what I said in the thread https://community.emc.com/thread/180386
"The OS (FLARE image) comes factory installed in the storage box (precisely, the first five disks in the first DAE. EMC called them Vault Disks). In some conditions if the vault disks gets corrupted, EMC authorized service personnel performs a re-imaging in the field. The step-by-step instructions guide can be generated by CPG (CLARiiON Procedure Generator), and the FLARE bundle or recovery image can be downloaded from EMC Service Partner Web (https://servicepartners.emc.com/restricted/index.aspx). Only EMC employees and partners can access this site. I'm afraid you have to find out its first DAE with its own vault disks."
It's not free.

Sorry for thread capping but I have just received the same unit
What is the black cable in the photo plugged in the back of the ktn stl4, what type of connector is it.
I am planning on connecting point to point via a PCI-X or PCI-E HBA. Its only for a home lab so cheapest possible.
i just finished setting up a IBM ds4000 the same way with lc to lc.
cheers
