Can I move volumes between Celerra NSX and NSG8 both attached to DMX4
I have a DMX4 that is the storage backend for both an NSX and an NSG8 NAS filer head. The problem is that the NSG8 has excess storage and the NSX is running out. So I want to move some of the storage between the NAS heads. Sounds easy enough, but I think I better run this past some folks smarter than I first.
I am new supporting this environment, but I am being told that the volume assignment is managed by the BIN file and I cannot do anything. That does not make logical sense to me. Hear me out and tell me if I am going the wrong way here.
My thought is that first, any file system must be removed from the volumes.
Then, I will need to delete the volumes.
Then I should just do a discovery on the NSX and build another file system
Do I have this right?

Move as in unmount on one gateway and make it visible with the data intact on the other gateway.
I would suggest to get some temp. storage, replicate the fs and then free up the original space
I order to free up the space you first need to analyze which devices they are using.
If you are new to this I would suggest to get help from EMC professional service

The issue doesn't reflect an issue with data on the file system. It's like this:
- 2 NAS gateways, each getting their storage from the same DMX4 array. NAS1 has excess storage but all disk assigned to file systems. NAS2 is running out of storage and needs more.
- We want to delete the file system on NAS1 (lots of small file systems live on NAS1)
- We want to delete the volumes on NAS1
- We want to discover the volumes and provision them on NAS2
There is no data to migrate. We just want the physical resources moved to the other system

Then you still some steps which require someone very familiar with the system.
- Delete file systems and dvols von the NAS side – may need to cleanup SCSI chains as well
- Change the bin file to remove the LUNs from one gateway and make them visible to the new system
- Then run a server_devconfig on the new system and create new file systems
I would suggest to contact your local EMC team to figure out who can help you there.
You might not have to change the bin file directly but even if you can do this via symcli its still typically done by EMC
