Recover NMSQL from NMM

Hi Folks

Currently on 7.6.3 and backing up SQL using NMSQL 5.2

SQL will be upgarded to 2012 and need to use NMM(since SQL 2012 only supported backed up in NMM).

While checking on backward recovery compatibility, I have a few queries and need further clarifications

1) What does  this mean? Current SQL backup group have snapshot policy set as daily. So not recoverable when you go NMM?

However, NMM 2.4 SP1 cannot recover snapshot backup created by using an earlier version of NMSQL.(Full statement below)

2) NMM2.4 mentioned data backed up using NMSQL can be recovered if above criteria is met. BUT NMM 3.0 document otherwise. So if you have say 5 years retention of SQL data taken in NMSQL then all obsolete when NMM used? Assuming you not preserving old infra for recovery purposes.

Thank you

NMM 2.4 App Guide

A full, inremental, or differential backup of SQL Server data (including files and filegroups) created by using a previous NetWorker Module for SQL Server (NMSQL) can be recovered by using NMM 2.4 SP1. However, NMM 2.4 SP1 cannot recover snapshot backup created by using an earlier version of NMSQL.

NMM 3.0 Install Guide

After you install NMM 3.0, perform a full backup of your Exchange Server data and SQL Server data before performing recovery. You cannot recover data from backup performed by using NME or NMSQL, with NMM.

Since you use NMSQL now, I would suggest to continue to use NMSQL which is part of NMM (so you use VDI and not VSS).  You should use NMM 3.0 and in that case you can leave your config as it is (except cluster switch if I remember correctly which had to be changed - if you have one).

Thanks for the reply Hrovje

But is SQL 2012 supported in NMSQL? Unable to find it documented in matrix. Hence started this thread

Thanks again

NMSQL as such - when intergrated in NMM - is not called that way anymore.  So you need to refer to NMM support matrix.

Thierry,

You need to upgrade to NMM 2.4 at least, but I would rather go to NMM 3.0

What Networker server and client version are you currently running?

Thank you,

Carlos
