SRDF TimeFinder/Clone Gold copy

Hello all,

We have our DR set up with SRM 5.1 and SRDF/A for array based replication. We are also getting a gold copy on the recovery site using TimeFinder/Clone. We want to use the Clone devices for both Test recovery and actual failover. With SRDF SRA 5.5, test failover can be done using cloned replica devices. How can this be done for actual recovery by using clone replica devices without recovering on R2 devices? emcsupport

I really appreciate your time and help!

You cannot run a Disaster Recovery operation in SRM that utilizes the clones of the R2.

We are able to do the same by manually presenting the Clones to the recovery site hosts. But we are implementing SRA 5.5 in attempt to do this automatically without manual. SRA 5.5 does this for test recovery by masking and unmasking the Clone devices automatically. But we are not able to figure out how it can do the same during failover or actual recovery.

Because you cannot.  It is not a possible configuration using the SRA for SRDF.  If you want to implement what you describe, it would be a completely manual process.

To add to that, you can use the Clones as a gold copy on the protected/recovery sites.  That gives you another copy of the data.  However, as Drew stated, during a recovery the SRA will failover to the R2, not the Clone.

Using the gold copy option to create a clone of the R2 is simply a way to add another point-in-time copy.

Separate.  BTW if you aren't already using it, our TechBook is an invaluable resource for SRA/SRDF/SRM.

Thank you Drew and pete2c for your responses.

We are using the gold copy option to create clones from the R2 on the recovery site. However, we want to use the gold copies/replicas (clones) during test recovery and failover. We can achieve that for test failover with the 'Test recovery with TimeFinder/Clone' and 'Test Replica Masking Control' in the SRA options. We are wanting to do the same for the failover, which I understand is not possible unless we do it manualy.

However, I want to understand one thing. Are the gold copies we clone from R2 and the replicas we create for test recovery using TimeFinder/Clone going to be the same devices, or are they separate devices?

Thank you for your time!
