EMC Data Domain, 10 GB SFP+ DAC, Cisco, HP Server

Hi everyone

We plan to have a physical HP backup server HP DL380 G9 with a 10GB SFP+ network card to backup to a EMC Data Domain 2500 via Cisco Switches.

We would like to use DAC wires and we faced some issues in the past with communication on these wires with Dell Switches. Is there any issues known for Cisco DAC wires? And which network card verndor do you recommend in combination with Cisco and EMC Data Domain for the HP backup server side? Intel?

Cheers and thanks

Hi

Wow that is great information, thanks! Do you also know about a recommended card resp. card vendor or is all HP offered hardware OK.

Thanks,

Michi

Hi,

I wrote a KBA about a scenario where copper HP branded 10Gbe Twinax SFP+ cables failed to function during a DDOS code upgrade (a common fault for these cables).

Included in that KBA are details of the cables/manufacturers/PN's that EMC provide;

479726 : DD upgrade to 5.7.x causes a loss of 10Gbe copper twinax ports in DDOS

Please review and see if this helps with your question.

Maybe you have/had the same HP DAC cables?

FYI; If you ask Cisco, they will insist on their own DAC cables connected to a Cisco switch.

We have a lot of DD's connected to Cisco without their cables - it's not a genuine issue.

Jonathan

Hi Michi,

You're welcome.

The truth is (IMHO) that the days of being able to state which HBA's we can support in each vendor server are kind of gone now that the hardware is generally considered to be a stable technology and sheer list of possible permutations.

I guess that as long as it's a fairly new HBA model, and I guess it will need to be since it's 10gbe, then yes, I think that whatever HP offer as supported in your OS/server should be no issue.

Assuming HBA firmware, drivers etc... are also current.

I don't have any prior knowledge that implies you will have issues on the HBA side with DD/Cisco anyway.

regards, Jonathan
