Yes, As Rainer mentioned above, Using VDM's has some advantages (ease of management, security isolation, load balancing, migration and replication ...etc).

Good to know the following considerations when using VDMs with NFS:

- VDM can support a single NFS server for a single domain namespace..

- VDM supports NFSv3 and NFSv4 over TCP (UDP not supported).

- NFS configuration can only be performed with CLI ( can NOT be done using Unisphere).

I personally prefer to use VDMs in case of CIFS and to use the physical DM network interfaces for NFS!

1) Create the LUNs from the pool/RAID Group.

2) Connect the LUNs to the ~filestorage storage group.

3) Rescan Storage Systems (wait for the task to complete).

4) Hoover over the Storage tab -> under storage configuration click on Storage Pools for File to verify the assignment (click on Volumes for more details).

5) Create the interfaces:  Settings->Network->Settings For File -> Interfaces -> Create (follow the wizard).

For CIFS:

6) Create the VDM.

7) Create the CIFS Server and join it to the domain (select the VDM from the dropdown list and the network interfaces created on step 5).

8) Create the File System (select the VDM from the dropdown list).

9) Verify the Mount Point Creation.

10) Create the Share (select the VDM from the dropdown list, the CIFS sever and select the network interface you want to use).

For NFS:

6) Create the File System (select the Physical DM from the dropdown list).

7) Verify the Mount Point Creation.

8) Storage -> Shared Folders -> NFS -> Create (select the Physical DM from the dropdown list).

9) Fill the required access information.

10) you can use any IP address (network interface created on step 5)  to mount the NFS (configure the security and

permissions of the NFS share , chown, chmod ...etc).

And for sure you will need to visit support.emc.com and download the manuals for more customizations.

If you really want to use NFS VDM’s you have to use the CLI – they are not in the GUI

my point was that there is still value looking at the PDF Manuals since they not only show the steps and command they also each include a concepts section that explains the Feature and its use cases

Reading these concepts sections that are only a few pages long per Feature is one of the best ways to learn how the VNX file side works

Can anyone tell me please why Physcial DM network interface is better than VDM virtual network interface for NFS?

Doesn't that affect during failover or giveback?

The difference is mostly that through a VDM attached interface you can only access NFS shares on that VDM and not on others
