Optiplex 390 SFF bad memory slot??
I cannot get any memory stick (tried 2gb and 4gb pc3-10600) to read in slot 1. The computer refuses to boot and stalls at a black screen immediately if any memory is installed there. If I just put memory in slot 2, no problem. I cannot see any visible damage to slot 1 and cleaned it with contact cleaner. Is there anything else to check? I had bios A09 and then upgraded to A14. CPU is an I5 2400. Thanks!

So if you put a single memory stick in slot 2, the machine boots fine. But if you move that same memory stick to slot 1 (slot 2 empty) it fails to boot or enter BIOS?

Then Slot 2 might be the primary one, and have you tried memory in BOTH Slot 1 and 2?

If you populate both slots no boot. Either stick will work in slot 2.

pc3-10600 is too slow AND max ram requires low density 1.35v ram
DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64 •

Hi @benny269,
It's not happening because you have an I3. Bad RAM slots are possible and the 390 is a bit older. Though doubtful, one can always check for any possible dirt or bent pins in the slot.
