Can we do replication between 2 Mtrees on same Data Domain in Avamar?

Hi,

We know Avamar with a DD can replicate to another Avamar grid with another DD.

If we have one DD only, and create 2 MTrees, one for Avamar A, one for Avamar B, can we replicate data between them?

I mean, Avamar A backup data to Mtree A, and then replicate the content of Mtree A to Mtree B on Avamar B?

This sounds strange, but it's for a more complicated migration project, so I just need to know if it's doable, does Avamar/DD support this?

Any one tested it before?

You can replicate between two Avamar systems attached to the same DD but the use case for that is pretty limited.

This is common for root-to-root migrations where we're replacing an Avamar system with a newer model and it is well tested.

Ian, On a another scenario, one of my customer has 3 different physical sites. There are 3 Data Domain installed on each site but just one single Avamar on the Primary site backing up locally. Customer is asking to setup MTree replication across those Data Domains for multiple secondary copies and should be able to restore from the Avamar. I understand this is not best way but can be doable by modifying the MTrees into LSU and assisgning the same DDBoost user. Do you see any problem there or any extra cautions to be followed ?

MTree replication of Avamar MTrees is not supported except in Cyber Recovery configurations.

When Avamar takes a checkpoint, it creates a corresponding Data Domain snapshot to maintain consistency between Avamar and Data Domain in case a checkpoint rollback is required. Snapshots are replicated during MTree replication and there would be no Avamar on the other side of the replication to clean them up after they are no longer needed. This would lead to the filesystem on the target DD filling up with stale data.

If the customer wants to replicate their data offsite, they need to configure Avamar managed file replication to an Avamar replication partner integrated with the Data Domain at the destination or use the Cyber Recovery solution.

I'd also mention one more use case where MTree replication of Avamar-integrated Data Domain is supported, it is for replacing one Data Domain with another Data Domain. There is a procedure for it on the support website.
