Dell G3 power adapter is not sufficient (130W) i5 8300H 1050

Hi, I have dell G3 with GTX 1050. It has a annoying issue. When I play a game with high graphics and gpu usage (GTA 5) during CHARGING the battery, the CPU clocks goes down to 800MHZ, to can charge the battery :s if i use a custom battery config (50-55 %) and i have more battery than that, this does not happen, and the cpu stays on 3.9 ghz, but sometimes it stops charging and uses the battery for 1 second ( the brightness of the screen and the cpu clock goes down again) and in the windows bar show the charger is not plugged in (for one or two second randomly ). if i disable the "BD PROCHOT" with ThrottleStop during charging the battery and gaming specially gta, windows says the charger is plugged in but the battery is now discharging (the clocks stays on 3.9). i read similar problem in the Dell 7577 (battery discharging during gaming with 130W adapter), but this one (g3) goes down the cpu clock to can charge the batt. I have 130w adapter and I think the problem is that 130w adapter is not sufficient to power Dell G3 3579. That issue is not acceptable for customers because It is a gamer notebook. Is dell going to fix that problem? Or my 130W adapter is failing ?

Hi PleasePovideSolution9,

Thanks for posting, apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

Do you experience this same situation under normal circumstances?  Like when looking up information on the internet?  How about when using productivity software?  Email?  If not, then the system is likely performing as designed.

What system BIOS are you running? Make sure you have 1.8.1 installed. Also, what Operating system are you using?

Hi I'm having the same problem. There isn't anything wrong with my charger or the port. I have also updated all drivers and BIOS. What do I do? This is a new laptop.

Based on the number of reports of this behavior across multiple models, it really does seem that Dell has sold some gaming systems with undersized power supplies for the system's needs under certain loads.  I know that Apple has done this on at least certain MacBook Pro models with the result that under sustained heavy load, the system will actually begin draining the battery even while external power is connected.  I think that was a poor choice even for a "general purpose" laptop like that, but it seems an even poorer choice for Dell to make on gaming systems that are EXPECTED to be under sustained heavy load on a regular basis given the target audience and use case of such systems.

On the other systems where I've seen this issue reported, those systems are also sometimes sold with 180W adapters if certain CPU and GPU combinations are selected, and I believe I remember some users finding that if you used a 180W adapter on a system configuration that shipped with a 130W adapter, this problem went away.  I'm not 100% on that, but I would expect that if the system model in general supported taking advantage of a 180W adapter, it would be able to do that even with a different CPU and GPU installed, so if my memory is right, I'm not surprised this solved the issue.  If in that case, that might be a viable workaround for this system, although Dell 180W adapters are admittedly somewhat expensive and of course customers shouldn't have to purchase another, different AC adapter separately just for their system to perform properly for its designed use case to begin with -- in my opinion, anyway.

But if anyone who has this system also happens to have access to a Dell 180W adapter to test with, it would be a helpful test to run.

If you are stuck with your 130w charger and dont want to purchase new 180w power adapter then try undervolting your cpu and gpu which makes them use less power. Try to find a sweet spot between performance and power consumption.(By checking if issue exists) You will get a small hit in performance but its better than sudden drop in framerate which is noticable and frustrating.

I have the same issue with my G3 3579. I did purchase a 180w (Dell) adapter for this very reason, and it's even worse than with the 130w the laptop came with.

The UEFI recognizes it as 180w, but it switches back and forth under lighter loads than the standard one! I am using the newest available firmware. It is possible the 180w adapter I bought is defective, and is not able to deliver the full power it is supposed to (or heaven forbid, I got a counterfeit... it looks genuine, though). Or perhaps somehow the G3 does not recognize it as a 180w while gaming and so it switches to battery inappropriately, even though in the UEFI settings it clearly says 180w... ?

It's annoying that Dell sells these laptops with inappropriately low-powered adapters, especially since they have 180w adapters that they include with other models. Hybrid power my butt... it's an undersized adapter, nothing more.

I do understand that the G3 was/is a budget-oriented gaming laptop, so I don't even mind that much that I had to buy a 180w unit.  I just want to know why it doesn't work!  If the UEFI recognizes it as 180w and it is a genuine Dell adapter with the right voltage and connector, should it not work?  I noticed when I was looking for a 180w adapter that there are many different models of what appear to be the same thing...

I contacted the seller of the 180w power adapter and they replaced it under warranty.  The new adapter has worked much better... it did switch to battery a few times at first, but after that it stopped and remained on AC power throughout a gaming session, which it had not managed to do with the stock 130w adapter.  I wonder if the system had some kind of function where it had to "learn" that it could pull more current from the new one.  I've only had the replacement one a short time, but for now it does appear to have fixed the issue.  I really like the G3 a lot, and this was one sore spot that is hopefully now fixed.

Ok, that second adapter eventually got replaced as defective also. The third one was the new slimline style where the cord is meant to wrap around the brick, and it works flawlessly. No more switching to battery at all, even when I pushed it with Furmark and Prime95. Part number on the unit is HA180PM181, DP/N 0N7MWW. Works perfectly with G3-15-3579, i7-8750H, 1050 Ti.

Hello, I would like to know if the new 180w charger has not given you problems. I am deciding whether to buy the same for a G3 3579.
