Windows 10 Digital License

Hi guys, I want to fully format my 2nd hand Dell G7 laptop, including deleting all the partition. The only concern I have is my Windows 10 license. I am unsure whether this will affect my Windows 10 license as a friend of mine told me that upon reformatting, I can delete all the partition except for the System Reserved as this partition holds the activation key for my OS license. I want to know if this is true or not? And if I delete all the partition, what are the possible scenarios that I may experience with the Windows 10 license? Will it be activated again? I've read on some threads that I can link my Microsoft Account to my OS license, but I want to use local login on my laptop and not MS account. I am fully aware that upon deleting all partition, Dell factory image and support will also be deleted. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

You can't purchase a G7 laptop Bare without an os.

The reserved partition DOES NOT HOLD the activation key.

Your License key is stored in bios. It can't become lost.

Clean install onto new blank drive or old formatted drive will work without incident.

For Older systems you have to use a key from COA or email as its not stored in the bios SLP.

These keys are for install not for activation and they are version specific.

I agree that the system will install and activate while online.  You don't need to enter any keys but if you make certain types of component changes on the system it may not reactivate.  Also, time may be needed to reactivate, so give it a couple of days.

You can use the Win 10 Media Creation Tool and create a USB drive with the install media.

So I purchased a Dell XPS 15 a week ago and it came with Windows 10 Home. I have replaced the SSD and I have been trying to get Windows 10 Pro to install. I used the Windows Media Creation Tool and created a Windows 10 Pro USB but when I try to get Windows 10 Pro installed, it installs Win 10 Home.Is there a way to remove the digital key for Win Home, so I can install Win Pro...? I have a key for Win Pro but because of the digital key, I can't seem to get WIn Home to install. I purchased a larger, faster SSD and I still can't get Win Pro installed. ANY assistance would greatly be appreciated.

Hi, my company has bought few used Dell Desktop the Optiplex 9020 that we upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. Apparently, I noticed that the sticker activation key is nowhere to be found for this machine with a service tag . It must have been removed. Is there a way I could retrieve the activation key so we could activate the OS?

Thank you

9020's come with WIN8.X bios key.

https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-Wiki/WINDOWS-8-Genuine-Microsoft-Label/ta-p/5189698

So you use OEM System builder DVD to F12 install these using USB 2.0 optical drive.

This drive works on all dells and will burn DUAL LAYER Dvd disks.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8x-external-usb-2-0-blu-ray-disc-double-layer-dvdrw-cd-rw-disc-rewriter-black/9243009.p?skuId=9243009

The reason you need dual layer is because the INSTALL.WIM file is too big now with windows 10  1809 1903 1909.

You use the drive along with this DVD

https://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9B-32-350-238

When you start the install you click the "I dont have a key" option and choose HOME or PRO depending on what the Windows Genuine label says.

After install you download the WINDOWS 10 Driver Cab file.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=HRN4M

https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER03501819M/1/9020-win10-A02-HRN4M.CAB

Once thats done you move the downloaded file to the My Documents folder.

You then install 7ZIP and extract the contents of the CAB in that directory.

https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

You then Right Click on any yellow !  in device manager and say install from my PC instead of from the internet.

After that You can go online and windows will activate automatically.

You can legally use ONE DISK and ONE DRIVE on ALL of your Dells. You do not need to buy a disk for each one.

HOWEVER I recommend getting more than 1 copy just because having only 1 disk that works is an issue in an office with lots of people.

You don't need more than 1 drive because you can move the drive from machine to machine.

If you have Models that include a Drive you still need the specific disk so that you have Cyberlink Power DVD that works with windows 10.

The DVD codecs are removed from 8 and 10 that were included in win7.
