XPS 13 9380 Wifi Problems Ubuntu

I have dual booted my XPS 13 with ubuntu and while the wifi works perfectly on windows, I've had problems with it on ubuntu since day one. The connection drops and network manager crashes, sometimes freezing the whole system. I have tried updating the kernel and the ath10k firmware (drivers for the QCA6174 wifi card), but the problem persists. A suggested workaround was to only connect to 2.4Ghz networks but this is not ideal (and I haven't tested it for long enough to say if it works) and given that dell ships this laptop with the same hardware and ubuntu preinstalled I was wondering if there is a better fix that won't require choosing a specific network AP every time I connect to a new wifi. The wifi card is not replaceable. Alternatively, is there a linux distro that definitely works with the laptop?

If anyone has the developer edition of the XPS 9380 what kernel/ath10k driver version are you running?

I also have problems on resume from sleep, requires a reboot to fix. Will post some logs when I get home.

I'm using 9360 which I bought last year and dual booted with ubuntu and I've had the same problem since day one. The wifi just seems to drop randomly and turning the wifi off and on again can regain the connection. The network manager used to freeze a few months ago but not any more now I guess because of some software updates. I don't think it's a problem with the wifi itself since my phone never lost connection randomly. Would love to know a fix.

Same issues here with the XPS 13 9380 using the ath10k driver and Ubuntu 18.04.2 + latest updates. Just started happening a lot the last few days (perhaps an OS update triggered it) and only way to recover is to reboot. Very annoying, would love to have a fix.

Same notebook, same system, same issues. When the wifi drops out, I click on the wifi icon in the top right corner and turn it off and back on. Always works. Pretty sad Dell chose this wifi adapter for this notebook with Ubuntu on it, clearly not the best choice. I would not have chosen this notebook but the latitude 7400 with intel wifi instead if I would have known. My next step is trying to install the next versions of Ubuntu, 18.10, 19.04 and later 19.10 and see if that helps.

Hi All,

I had the same problems with WiFi in Fedora 30 but it seems to be resolved with kernel 5.2.18. Please reply to my question at the end of this post.

Hardware: Dell XPS 13 (9380) with Killer Wireless-AC 1435 connected to a Compal Connect-Box (Liberty Global, UPC, Unitymedia). Same SSID assigned to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band, channel optimization is on.

OS: Fedora 30 Dual-Boot with Windows 10. The laptop came pre-installed with Windows 10.

Issue: WiFi is stable under Windows, but fails as described by users above under F30. After disabling 5 GHz in the Connect-Box the connection is stable in F30.

[local@localhost ~]$ lspci -k
02:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)
Subsystem: Bigfoot Networks, Inc. Killer 1435 Wireless-AC
	Kernel driver in use: ath10k_pci
	Kernel modules: ath10k_pci

After recent updates the connection seems to be stable in dual-band mode (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). Kernel:

[local@localhost ~]$ uname -r
5.2.18-200.fc30.x86_64

Summary: WiFi was unstable in F30 in the 5 GHz band, but not in the 2.4 GHz band.

Note that somebody filed bug 1751511 against kernel in Fedora 30.

Could someone who had the same connection problems please confirm that the connection problems only occur in the 5 GHz band?

Thank you!

Guys,

Just a quick update. Switching to the oem kernel solved my issue. I am running 4.15.0-1045-oem, though I presume the oem versions after that would work as well.

Short update: Since my last post on 09 Oct 2019 I had no connection issues anymore.  In the meantime I am on Kernel 5.3.6.

Unfortunately after some recent updates I again have the frequent WiFi connection freezes.

Kernel 5.3.7 still not working for me.

Wi-Fi is frequently dropping out (5 GHz)

$ uname -r
5.3.7-200.fc30.x86_64

$ lspci -k
3a:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)
Subsystem: Bigfoot Networks, Inc. Device 1535
Kernel driver in use: ath10k_pci
Kernel modules: ath10k_pci

However, I see that I am running a pretty old BIOS (2.3.1), and I see that version 2.9.0 has a potential fix: "Enhance Killer Wifi stability."

I trust that it will be solved after a BIOS upgrade.

Hi All,

I also had a major problem with resume after deep sleep, with wifi but caused by a Bluetooth issue. Please see my comment #87 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1799988/comments/87) and the foregoing comments.

My comment refers to a patch to apply to a kernel; I have applied that patch I refer to, to a 5.3.15 kernel source tree, rebuild the kernel (see your Ubuntu docs) and installed it. My problems with wifi after suspend/resume are gone.

Hope this helps others fixing this very annoying issue.

Also make sure your BIOS and Atheros firmware are up to date. Note for the previous poster, I upgraded my BIOS to [Vendor: Dell Inc. Version: 1.8.0 Release Date: 10/01/2019] (info from sudo dmidecode --type BIOS) but that in itself does *NOT* fix the problem. The BLE advertisement kernel patch did.

BTW: Running Devuan Beowulf (https://devuan.org/) on this nice laptop

Regards,

Steven

Please see my post on the second page for a fix (kernel patch) that when applied, fixes this annoying issue.

New to this forum so I replied to the last post; should have replied to this initial post.

Switching the Cable Router made the trick for me. My old Connect-Box was replaced by a new Vodafone Station (Arris TG3442DE) and since then no issues with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands with ath10k.
