Inspiron 3470, the incredible slowness

Almost every time I turn on the computer, after 20 minutes or so, he engages in a frantic activity (you know that noise the computer makes?) and then everything you do (navigating on the internet, opening an app, checking emails, takes many minutes) takes minutes, it's all very, very, irritatingly slow. I tried everything: running support assistant, updating windows, troubleshooting, uninstalling smartByte...any more ideas?

Paul, I solved my problem. Apparently, it has nothing to do with malware, virus or lack of memory. I uninstalled ALL the Dell programmes which came with the computer. What a transformation! Now, it's a pleasure to use my Inspiron, instead of a nightmare. Give it a try. You can always restore to a previous system restore point, if it does not work for you.

Hello there,

In the other reply the person sent you, most likely the case is you do have viruses/malware in your system. Has this been occurring for a long time, because if so you could have an outdated driver possibly. You can check the rating of your computer components on Control Panel —> System and Security —> Select System —> Select the General Tab and then whalla. NOTE: You will need administrative permissions to use this feature of your computer.

Not in this case. It's protected and updated.

Thanks, but it's not malware. I constantly run checks, even factory reset the computer.

How much RAM does this PC have?

If no malware, what and how much junk is running in the background?

Does this happen if you reboot in Safe Mode with Networking?

NO OS STATED at all; W10 or old now dead and dying W7 (intel just ended W7 support oct 29 this  month and MS Q1-2020 it ENDS forever. RIP W7,)

The PC running slow is because: (lots really but nut shelled)

  1. HDD is bad, is it an old spinner and not fails smart tests, I run my own linux smart tests, I TRUST.
  2. W7 is now infected. reload the OS, and cured, (cleaning a virus can take days and most are impossible)
  3. never upgraded to SSD< why be the last. no really ?  HDD boot drives stink now,  after you learn this , then you say same. (I promise)
  4. Other problems, PC overheats (cpu, gpu or case) all PCs all CPU slow down when too hot (magical intel inside) the CPU does that to save its OWN BACON, it is a wonderful feature !!! means run chip temp apps and see for your self the temps over 50c or near 90c the CPU even stalls.

I have exactly the same problem. I have a brand new Inspiron 3470, and it moves with all the speed of an elephant with no legs.

The 4gb memory runs at 95 per cent most of the time; the hard disk is at 100 per cent or near to it quite a lot of the time. The screen freezes for 10, 20, 30 seconds or more. This is with just one or two programs going, such as Edge or Word. I've done a McAfee virus chase with nothing nasty detected. My knackered 10-year-old Dell that I've just retired went a lot quicker than this.

Does anyone know what's gone wrong here?

@Dr_Paul

4 GB of RAM is a bit low for Win 10...

Reboot in Safe Mode + Networking and see if it runs faster, and without freezing. Note that not all Windows functions/features are available in Safe Mode, but you should be able to test performance this way.

How much junk is running in the background? Disable all Dell software like SupportAssist, Dell Update, Dell SupportAssist Remediation etc. (Note: you may not have all of these Dell apps installed.) Look on the Startup tab in Task Manager and uncheck them there.

You may also have to Start>Run, type in: services.msc and click OK. On that screen disable any Dell services that are listed but NOTHING else! Then reboot normally and see if performance improves.
