XPS 15-7590, freezes randomly occasionally

Hi,

I have experienced some random freezing issues on my brand new Dell XPS 15 7590 (FHD version i7 9750H 16GB ram GTX 1650 and 500GB SSD).

It mostly happens when browsing (Chrome and Firefox), but occasionally when I'm using Java based applications such as the Mathematical tool Maple. I do usually have a browser open in the background so I can't be sure. Also, rarely when using Windows File Explorer with no browsers in the background.

When my screen freezes, I can still give commands to the computer: If I press ALT-CTRL-DEL it will finish that command straight away after the freeze. If I type stuff, the typed stuff will be quickly written when the freeze is passed. Note, that the freeze can be lasting for anything between 5 to 30 seconds.

I have updated all my Drivers and I have run Dell Support Assist. I have also manually updated to the latest Intel display driver and updated my Graphics card with Nvidia Experience. In addition, I have run Dell Update, so I have the latest BIOS. I have also removed all Killer drivers and installed the bare Intel WiFi card driver. All in an attempt to solve my freezing issues but it haven't solved it unfortunately.

I like my XPS laptop and would be happy to know if anyone has found a solution to this problem.

Thanks!

Best,

David

I picked up an XPS 15-7590 2 weeks ago and like all of you it kept freezing ALL THE TIME!!!  I updated everything both dell & windows updates.  I've rebooted several times.  I removed everything that wasn't necessary.  The issue was right out of the box so I assumed it had to be either hardware related or something with the original software.  Then, finally I believe I discovered the issue after I stopped McAfee Real Time Scanning and it worked perfectly or at least it has for the last day.

I haven't uninstalled it yet, just stopped the Real Time Scanning.  I read that uninstalling and reinstalling has resolved the issue and will probably try it in the future.

UPDATE:  It works better after stopping McAfee Real Time Scanning, but it still does it.  Just not constantly.

UPDATE:  Sorry, I was wrong.  Issue came right back. Reinstalled Windows 3 times, called the Dell Help desk 3 times.  The first 2 calls, they confirmed that "it was not a hardware issue" even though the issue occurred right out of the box and was still there after a fresh install of windows with nothing else installed.  Everything was updated (Dell software, windows software & the bios).  Then I was routed to the software folks where they proceeded to tell me that there would be a fee for them to look at the issue.  After arguing with her, she hung up on me.  I then traded it out at the Microsoft Store where I bought it.  Now the new one has no issue.  Hummm...... Sounds like a hardware issue to me.  Clearly Dell has an issue that needs resolved.

My recommendation is to exchange your laptops as there is no fixing this issue.  Also if Dell wants to charge us for a clear Dell issue, than just return it.  Unacceptable!

I have the same issue on a brand new 7590 (16Gb RAM) running Ubuntu 19.1.  Whether powered or not, it randomly pauses/freezes for about four seconds (completely - the cursor, the audio subsystems, graphics, absolutely everything) then suddenly continues again.  This can happen a dozen times a day.  I can't believe this is best laptop I could buy outside the "Maciverse".

I had an similar issue with mine XPS 15-7590 OLED (Win10 1909) freezing randomly for roughly about 5 seconds. After this, the system continues if nothing has occurred. Opening the Windows Event Viewer showed numerous entries in the Windows Log > Application with:

Removing the app Dell SupportAssist and these entries do not re-appear. Best of all, mine laptop does not freeze up anymore.

If you have this issue running Ubuntu, then this might be a hardware issue.

I removed most Dell software and kept Dell Update, for a while it was performing flawlessly, but the freezing came back. Some noted that if you remove all dell software it doesn't freeze. I remove dell update as well and see what happens, I'll try to post an update in a week.

Does anyone else hear a noise from the laptop when it is frozen?

I do have the same problem. I bought new dell xps 7590, i9, 1TB, 32GB, 4k touch. when on the browser (chrome) or using adobe lightroom, it freezes indefinitely for hours - mouse pointer stuck on screen, no response from keyboard, none of the keys works. it just frozen. I have all updates done and this looks problem right out of the box.

Very difficult to pin point what is causing the issue. i have to force shutdown the laptop and i loose the work. This is very annoying and very disappointing considering it is marketed as top of the line laptop.

Hello,

we have about 10 XPS 15 (7590 and 9570) in our company and all have the freezing problem. I have a 9570 for nearly two years and the freezing starts about 12 or 6 months ago. I think it is a BIOS issure.

Regards,

Thomas.

@gereksiz how has it been going since you removed the Dell Update utilities?

@nickfall Unfortunately still freezes randomly for no apparent reason. I could be browsing the web or working on a Word document and it freezes for a few seconds. I got very busy so I ignore it now. I will look into it when I get more time. Please post here if you find a solution. Thanks!

Yes, there is some noise from the laptop. Did you find any solution?

So far so good, I hope I'm not jinxing it by saying it

I removed most Dell system utilities (incl Dell Battery management something, Dell Support Assist, which had been buggy for a few months - not showing any update, etc.). I kept Dell Bios Verification and Dell Digital Services Delivery.

Also maybe related, but my laptop (7590 i9 4k display) had been suffering spurious wake-ups from sleep and hibernate, since December 2019. That one was a real bummer, much, much worse than the 5-second freezes... After the unwanted wake-up happened, the laptop would be running, but the screen remained off. Nothing to be done but a hard power-up using long-press on the power button... anyway, I updated the Killer drivers and haven't run into that problem again (crossing fingers). I don't want to hijack this thread, just mentioning this because I don't know how those two issues intersect, if any, and if an update of the wireless drivers did anything to help in this regard at all.

Hello Prat,

From which side of the laptop is the noise coming from? Also, is it possible for you to share a video of the noise with us in private message so that we can advise your further? I had left a private message with a set of troubleshooting steps. Do revert with your observation so that I can advise you further.

I am also facing this issue and I am trying to create a request but the SupportAssist always says we are unable to create your request now. What should I do now?
