U4919DW, Apple Mac mini, stuck in 1920x540 or lower resolution
I have the new Apple Mac mini 8.1 with Intel i7 3.2Ghz and updated to Catalina latest update. I do not have the option to go higher in resolution than 1920x540? Connected via Dell supplied HDMI cable. Bought this monitor specifically for this Mac. What can I do?

An update, was able to increase the resolution via the USB-C cable to a max resolution of 3840x1080. After trolling the internet, found out that this is the max resolution for Mac mini via the USB Type-C cable. If the HDMI cable is a true 2.0 cable, am I able to get to the maximum resolution of the monitor?

For Dell Technical Support to offer assistance, you need to test the Dell U4919DW on a true Windows OS PC.
Read the sticky at the top of this Monitors Forum, "Dell monitor, Apple FAQ"
The U4919DW HDMI cable provided and the HDMI ports are 2.0. We cannot speak to the not tested/validated by Dell Apple operating system. There are no Apple OS drivers on the U4919DW driver page.
You should read the U4919DW threads on the Apple Forum. If need be, start a new thread on the Apple Forum detailing your issue. Perhaps they can offer some advice on how to get our monitor working on the Apple PC.

@prco the U4919DW's maximum resolution is 5120x1440, not 3840x1080. The Mac Mini's specs suggest that its outputs should all support this, since 5120x1440 is slightly fewer total pixels than 4K and certainly 5K. You could try a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, but I'm not sure that will be any more successful given that both USB-C to USB-C and HDMI 2.0 to HDMI 2.0 cables should have worked given this combination of display and source system.

@prco well Googling "Mac Mini 5120x1440" turned up quite a few results of people tearing their hair out about this, both with the U4919DW and other "dual QHD resolution" displays -- including this one. Seems like this may be a limitation on the Mac side.

@prco cool, thanks for reporting back. If a single source port can drive the display when treating them as two independent "tiles" but can't drive the display as a single 5120x1440 entity, then it's pretty clearly an OS/driver problem or limitation. Unfortunate that you had to buy another piece of hardware to work around it and then accept some other hoops/annoyances, but I'm glad you at least got the whole display running at its native resolution.

Update, got it function with clear and sharp view using a Thunderbolt 3 to dual HDMI adapter. Monitor runs in dual screen mode and the windows can share between the screen areas by disabling 'spaces'.
Not ideal solution but way cheaper than eGPU method.
