Need raid cable advise for poweredge R730 with miniHBA330

hello everyone,

I recently purchased a refurbished poweredge r730 8x2.5 bay.

I also purchased an HBA330 mini (i believe it is from an r740 as I could not find any reference to r730's using this card in mini format)

Having purchased the mini I realized it did not come with any cables to connect to my backplane.

I purchased 2 different cables from ebay from China several weeks ago as I wasn't sure which ones I needed.  They were :

0F7P5J  SAS cable and
F037K  Raid controller cable

could someone tell me if either of those is the one I need for my setup and if not point me in the right direction?

Thanks so much.

Hello,

I've been advised that either cable should work. In your shoes, I would purchase part number FN73C, it is identified as the mini PERC to 2.5"x8 backplane cable. F037K is identified as the mini PERC to 2.5"x8 expander cable. The parts are identified as alternates, I just hadn't seen it, so I didn't want to comment on that.

I can't find a specification on length, unfortunately.

Looking at the diagramming in the manual and with the information I was given in mind, it would lead me to believe that you were shipped the wrong cable.

Hi,

If you could, let us know the DPN# for the H330 mini that you have in hand, so I can confirm it's compatible for your R730. Though, there is a different between HBA330 and H330. HBAs are non-RAID controllers.

F7P5J is for cable from RAID controller to 8x 3.5" backplane, so that's not what you need. F037K would be correct, it's the cable for 8X 2.5" backplane.

Hi Joey,

The part I have is the HBA330 (non-raid) and the part number is  P2R3R

Hi,

The part you have there is compatible with R730.

F037K cable is about 6 inches too short to reach the backplane when the perc part is plugged in. I can't see this being the right cable unless the backplane drives were on the right side of the server instead of left, and I'm not sure that is a configurable option.

I searched google and found references to a FN73C cable, is this the one I want?? what is the difference between the 2? Is there a longer version of F037K?

Hi,

I think that the part number you found - FN73C - may well be the right one. I'd like to get the tag and take a look at the hardware config first though. I did see both the part you and Joey provided, so I'd just like to take that extra step. The R730 had multiple different backplane configurations, so this can be a tricky question without details. You're welcome to message it to either Joey or myself.

Hi,

Thanks for the tag, Dylan emailed me.

Based on the tag, I noticed originally it has H730 mini and F037K cable. Can I check with you, did you purchase again the cable or reuse the same cable in the server? If you have purchased the cable, can you let us know if the PN# has the white label F037K?

FN73C is an alternative part for F037K; but I can't tell if it's longer.

I had purchased this server refurb without any raid card.  The cable was not included.  The server came with a cable that went from the backplane directly to 2 slots on the motherboard (DPN 0K3H4M)

I purchased an HBA330 mini separately and the F037K cable separately.

the F037K cable does not have a white label on it, the only other markings on it are on the back of the perc circuitboard which reads:

F25 REPCB00084 100ohm REV_G

I think we might be looking at this the wrong way, since a backplane config can change. If the backplane config had never changed from time of order, the part number Joey listed would work - it's on the initial order. That would lead me to believe that sometime between manufacture and you purchasing it, the backplane must have been changed. It should still have a part number on it. Would you be able to identify that number?

I think the backplane DPN is 0R139X

It is the DPN in red below.  The blue is the side I am trying to connect to.  I'm not sure if there is another DPN for the left side or if the one I provided is for both.

Unfortunately, that part number isn't the right one. Im not sure what to call it (maybe a fan baffling?), but it's not what we're looking for. MOst likely, you'll need to remove the backplane to check the part number.

If you haven't done that before, it honestly sounds a lot scarier and more involved than it really is. Linked below is the user manual, page 156 details the process to remove the backplane. It also has some diagrams of cabling, so that may be beneficial, regardless.

the backplane number is 0TGNMY

That backplane matches the original order, along with the cable. By all the text, this is supposed to work. I'll contact a buddy of mine tomorrow, he's got access to a part database that's a bit different to ours and might help identify the correct cable.

Hi,

We're very puzzle about the cable that you are using. You mentioned that you bought the cable F037K from ebay, do you have the link to it or does it have any specification written?

Are you able to show us a picture of the cable that you have, and if there is a white label with DPN# stated, give us a picture too.

the cable does not have any markings indicating a part number. the ebay link to the item is here: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R730-PERC-Mini-Dual-SAS-RAID-Controller-Cable-F037K/254380170176?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

I also found a thread here which it looks like someone has a similar problem with the cable not being long enough: https://www.dell.com/community/Precision-Fixed-Workstations/Corect-R7910-SAS-Cable-to-PERC-H730P-with-backplane-0TGNMY/td-p/6166175
